The Institute of Excellence in Research and Law (I.E.R.L.) is an independent academic and legal awareness initiative committed to making quality legal education accessible, socially relevant, and intellectually transformative.

This seminar reflects that very mission — to address one of the most urgent and politically sensitive questions of our time: when does dissent become disloyalty in the public imagination, and who gets to decide what is “anti-national”?
About the Seminar
The seminar “Nationalism, Dissent, and Constitutional Morality: Interrogating the Label of ‘Anti-National’” is designed as a serious academic and legal awareness session intended to examine the growing misuse of the term “anti-national” in contemporary public discourse.
In a constitutional democracy, disagreement is not a threat to the nation; rather, it is often one of the strongest expressions of democratic participation.
Yet, in recent times, criticism of state action, questioning of public institutions, advocacy for rights, student protests, academic debates, and even calls for accountability are increasingly met with sweeping accusations of being “anti-national.”
This seminar seeks to critically analyse that phenomenon through the lens of constitutional values, democratic dissent, freedom of speech and expression, rule of law, and constitutional morality.
It aims to explore whether the label “anti-national” has, in many contexts, evolved into a rhetorical and political tool used to delegitimise disagreement, silence uncomfortable questions, and create fear around democratic participation.
This seminar therefore seeks to create a meaningful academic space where participants can reflect upon the relationship between patriotism, democratic disagreement, constitutional morality, civil liberties, and the weaponisation of public labels.
