Lord Ganesha is worshipped as the remover of obstacles, the giver of wisdom and the symbol of auspicious beginnings. Ganesh Chaturthi should therefore inspire wisdom, humility, discipline, compassion and inner purification. Unfortunately, much of what we witness today, particularly during Ganpati Visarjan, appears to have moved far away from these spiritual values. What was intended to unite society has increasingly become a competition over who can install the biggest Ganpati idol, organise the grandest procession, spend the most money and create the loudest noise.

There is an important historical distinction that must first be understood. Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak did not begin the worship of Lord Ganesha or invent the ancient spiritual practice of idol immersion. Lord Ganesha had been worshipped privately in Indian homes and temples for centuries. What Tilak did in the 1890s was transform the largely private Ganesh Chaturthi celebration into an organised public festival, popularly known as Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav.

India was under British rule at the time, political gatherings faced restrictions and society remained divided by caste, class and community. Tilak understood that a public celebration centred on Lord Ganesha could bring people together on a common cultural platform. Public Ganeshotsav celebrations became spaces for patriotic speeches, cultural programmes, social awareness, community interaction and discussions about India’s freedom. The larger purpose was to awaken national consciousness, strengthen unity and mobilise people against colonial rule.

Tilak used the public Ganesh festival as a powerful means of national awakening. He did not create it as a competition for gigantic idols, deafening sound systems, vulgar dancing, political promotion or the display of money and power. Its purpose was unity, but today it often becomes competition. Its purpose was national awakening, but today it is frequently reduced to commercial promotion. Its purpose was meaningful public participation, but today it is too often associated with noise, obstruction, extravagance and spectacle.

We must therefore ask an uncomfortable but necessary question: Is this spirituality, or has it become drama?

During many immersion processions, traditional prayers and devotional songs are pushed aside by inappropriate film songs, vulgar remixes and meaningless music played at unbearable volumes. People dance as if they are participating in a commercial street show rather than respectfully bidding farewell to a sacred form of Lord Ganesha. Roads are blocked for hours, hospital patients suffer, senior citizens are disturbed, students cannot study, animals become terrified and local residents are forced to endure the celebration whether they wish to participate or not.

Can an activity that causes suffering to others honestly be called devotion? A celebration does not become spiritual merely because the name of God has been attached to it. If our way of celebrating Lord Ganesha creates obstacles for thousands of people, what message are we giving to the God we worship as the remover of obstacles?

Then there is the growing competition to create increasingly enormous idols. Every mandal appears determined to prove that its Ganpati is taller, grander and more expensive than the others. But is the physical size of an idol a measure of the depth of our faith? Does a fifty-foot idol represent greater devotion than a small clay Ganpati worshipped with honesty in an ordinary home? God cannot be measured in feet, decorations, expenditure, crowd size or social-media views. A small idol accompanied by sincere devotion is infinitely more spiritual than a gigantic idol surrounded by ego, noise and publicity.

The environmental consequences are equally troubling. Idols made with Plaster of Paris, chemical paints and non-biodegradable materials can pollute seas, rivers and lakes. Plastic, thermocol, flowers, decorations and other waste are frequently left behind at immersion sites. We call our rivers sacred and then pollute them in the name of religion. We worship nature as divine and simultaneously damage it through our rituals. This contradiction cannot be defended as faith or tradition.

The present form of competitive, noisy and environmentally destructive Ganpati Visarjan must now stop. This does not mean that devotion to Lord Ganesha should stop, nor does it mean that Ganeshotsav itself should end. It means that the drama, competition, vulgarity, noise and pollution surrounding the celebration must end. We must preserve the spiritual essence while reforming practices that harm people, animals and nature.

Families and communities can worship small idols made from natural clay. Immersion can be conducted symbolically at home or in designated artificial ponds. Public mandals can organise peaceful prayers, meditation, devotional music, community meals, blood-donation camps, educational programmes, tree plantations, assistance for poor families and environmental initiatives. Instead of spending enormous amounts of money on decorations, DJs and sound systems, that money could educate underprivileged children, support hospitals, feed hungry people, help struggling families or protect animals.

Would Lord Ganesha not be happier if a poor child received an education in His name? Would feeding a hungry person not be a greater offering than playing loud music until midnight? Would planting and protecting trees not be more sacred than polluting the sea? Would helping a distressed family overcome its difficulties not honour the remover of obstacles more meaningfully than creating obstacles on public roads?

We must also reconsider our understanding of puja. Lighting a lamp, offering flowers, performing an aarti and reciting prayers can be beautiful expressions of devotion, but rituals without truth, compassion and ethical conduct are empty. God does not need our expensive decorations, deafening music or public display. God wants us to remove ego, greed, cruelty, dishonesty, anger and selfishness from our lives.

God does not love drama; God loves reality. God is not impressed by how loudly we announce our devotion. God sees how honestly and compassionately we live when there is no crowd watching us. Real spirituality is visible in how we treat our parents, families, employees, neighbours, animals and the environment. It is reflected in whether we earn ethically, speak truthfully, help vulnerable people and show kindness to every living being.

A person may perform an elaborate puja every day, but if that person exploits others, spreads hatred, behaves dishonestly or remains indifferent to suffering, the ritual has not created spirituality. Puja should transform our character. If it does not make us more truthful, peaceful and compassionate, it has remained only an external performance.

Lord Ganesha represents wisdom. If our celebration lacks wisdom, can we honestly call it Ganeshotsav? Lord Ganesha removes obstacles. If our processions create obstacles for ambulances, patients, elderly people, working citizens and entire neighbourhoods, are we truly honouring Him? Lord Ganesha represents auspiciousness. If our celebration pollutes water and frightens animals, what is auspicious about it?

Bal Gangadhar Tilak gave public Ganeshotsav a powerful social and national purpose suited to the needs of his time. India today is independent. Our responsibility is to give the festival a peaceful, compassionate, socially meaningful and environmentally responsible purpose for our time. Let Ganeshotsav continue as a celebration of devotion, wisdom, unity and service, but let the competition, vulgar songs, deafening noise, pollution and meaningless display end.

The most meaningful visarjan is not simply the immersion of an idol in water. The real visarjan is the immersion of our ego, anger, greed, dishonesty, hatred, pretence and selfishness. When these qualities dissolve within us, Lord Ganesha truly enters our hearts. That is devotion. That is spirituality. Everything else is merely drama.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi turned 76 on September 17, 2026, with birthday wishes coming from across India’s political and public life. Born on September 17, 1950, in Vadnagar, Gujarat, Modi has spent more than two decades in elected executive office, first as Chief Minister of Gujarat and, since 2014, as Prime Minister of India.

For a spiritual and wellness publication, however, his birthday also offers an occasion to look at a distinctive dimension of his years in national leadership: the prominent place given to Yoga, pilgrimage centres, temples, Buddhist heritage, Indian philosophy and the idea of “seva” — service — as part of the country’s cultural conversation.

Modi has himself spoken publicly about spirituality as an influence on his life. In an interaction published by the Prime Minister’s Office, he recalled that his inclination towards spirituality began at a young age and referred to the Ramakrishna Paramahamsa and Swami Vivekananda principle of “Jan Seva Hi Prabhu Seva” — service to people is service to the Divine — as an important inspiration.

That relationship between spirituality and service has continued to appear in his public language. In 2026, while speaking at the inauguration of Seva Teerth and Kartavya Bhavan in New Delhi, Modi invoked the idea of “Seva Paramo Dharmah”, describing service as a fundamental duty and connecting governance with responsibility towards people.

The spiritual theme is visible even in some of the events surrounding his birthday this year. In Varanasi, his Lok Sabha constituency and one of Hinduism’s most sacred cities, 76 priests performed a Ganga Abhishek to mark his 76th birthday. In Gujarat, religious and community programmes included prayers, diya-lighting and other events. Separately, public-service campaigns around the birthday have included health camps, blood donation, cleanliness and plantation activities.

Taking Yoga From India to the World

Perhaps the most internationally visible spiritual and wellness initiative associated with Modi’s premiership has been the International Day of Yoga.

During his address to the United Nations General Assembly in September 2014, Modi proposed an International Day of Yoga. The UN General Assembly subsequently adopted June 21 as the International Day of Yoga, with 177 countries co-sponsoring the resolution. The first International Day of Yoga was observed in 2015, with Modi leading a mass yoga programme in New Delhi.

Over the years, he has repeatedly presented Yoga not simply as physical exercise but as a holistic tradition connecting the body, mind, individual consciousness and wellbeing. In June 2026, he again highlighted Yoga’s roots in India’s spiritual heritage, while also sharing a Sanskrit verse honouring Maharishi Patanjali and stressing Yoga’s role in keeping the body healthy and the mind calm.

The globalisation of Yoga is significant from a spiritual perspective because it has taken an ancient Indian discipline into public spaces, schools, institutions and communities around the world. Yoga today is practised in many different religious, secular, fitness and wellness contexts, but its philosophical origins remain deeply connected with India’s spiritual traditions.

Kashi Vishwanath Dham: Reconnecting a Sacred City

Another major initiative during Modi’s tenure has been the redevelopment of the Shri Kashi Vishwanath Dham in Varanasi.

When Modi inaugurated the redeveloped complex in December 2021, he described it as more than a physical structure, calling it a symbol of India’s Sanatan culture and spiritual heritage. The project significantly transformed the area surrounding the historic Kashi Vishwanath Temple and improved connectivity between the temple and the Ganga.

Kashi occupies a unique place in India’s spiritual imagination. For millions of devotees, it is not simply a destination but a teerth — a sacred space associated with Lord Shiva, liberation, knowledge and the timeless relationship between life and death.

The redevelopment of pilgrimage infrastructure in Kashi has also represented a broader policy approach described by the government as “Virasat Bhi, Vikas Bhi” — heritage alongside development. In June 2026, Modi said that efforts ranging from bringing antiquities back to India to strengthening spiritual and pilgrimage infrastructure were intended to reconnect people with India’s traditions.

Mahakal Lok and the Spiritual Consciousness of Ujjain

The development of Shri Mahakal Lok in Ujjain has been another prominent spiritual heritage project associated with Modi’s tenure.

While dedicating the first phase of the project in 2022, Modi linked the restoration and development of India’s pilgrimage centres with the revival of cultural and spiritual consciousness. His address also referred to work at Kashi Vishwanath, Somnath, Kedarnath-Badrinath and other places of faith.

Ujjain, home to the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, has been a centre of Hindu spirituality, Shaivism, pilgrimage and learning for centuries. The Mahakal Lok project sought to expand the experience and infrastructure around this ancient centre of worship while presenting its religious stories and symbolism to contemporary visitors.

Kedarnath and the Legacy of Adi Shankaracharya

In the Himalayas, the redevelopment of Kedarnath Dham has similarly combined pilgrimage infrastructure with the restoration of spiritual heritage.

In November 2021, Modi inaugurated the reconstructed Samadhi of Adi Shankaracharya and unveiled a statue of the philosopher-saint at Kedarnath. During his address, he spoke about Adi Shankaracharya’s contribution to Indian philosophy and his emphasis on human welfare and a holistic understanding of life.

The symbolism is significant. Adi Shankaracharya occupies an extraordinary position in India’s philosophical history, particularly in the Advaita Vedanta tradition, and is traditionally associated with the revival and consolidation of important spiritual centres across India.

For modern pilgrims, improved infrastructure at places such as Kedarnath can make difficult sacred journeys more accessible, although development in ecologically sensitive Himalayan regions also requires continuing attention to environmental sustainability and carrying capacity.

Ayodhya and the Ram Mandir

The consecration of Ram Lalla at the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya on January 22, 2024 became one of the most prominent religious events of Modi’s premiership.

Ahead of the Pran Pratishtha ceremony, Modi announced that he would undertake an 11-day special spiritual observance, describing his role in the ceremony as a major responsibility and speaking about preparing himself spiritually for the occasion.

The Ram Mandir has profound religious significance for its devotees and has also been at the centre of a long and politically consequential historical dispute. Its consecration therefore carried religious, cultural and political meanings that different Indians may interpret differently. From a spiritual perspective, however, Ayodhya’s renewed prominence has brought the teachings and symbolism associated with Lord Ram — including dharma, maryada, duty, sacrifice and service — back into widespread public discussion.

India’s Buddhist Heritage and the Message of Compassion

Modi’s cultural-spiritual outreach has not been limited to Hindu pilgrimage traditions. His government has also highlighted India’s connection with Buddhism and Lord Buddha’s teachings.

In 2026, Modi inaugurated an international exposition of sacred Piprahwa relics associated with Bhagwan Buddha in New Delhi. Speaking there, he described India’s connection with Buddhist countries as extending beyond diplomacy and economics to bonds of faith and spirituality. He also pointed to infrastructure and visitor facilities being developed at Buddhist sites including Bodh Gaya, Sarnath, Shravasti, Kapilvastu, Kushinagar, Sanchi and others.

In July 2026, Modi welcomed Sarnath’s inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List, highlighting its association with Buddha and the ideals of wisdom, compassion and harmony.

Buddhism gives India a particularly powerful spiritual connection with many countries across Asia. Buddha’s teachings of compassion, mindfulness, the Middle Path and freedom from suffering also resonate strongly with contemporary conversations around inner wellbeing and mental peace.

Spirituality Beyond Ritual

The larger spiritual question raised by these initiatives goes beyond the construction or redevelopment of temples and pilgrimage corridors.

Indian spirituality has traditionally placed great emphasis on the transformation of the individual. Temples, sacred rivers, pilgrimages, Yoga, meditation and rituals can provide pathways, but the deeper teachings repeatedly return to values such as seva, compassion, self-discipline, truthfulness, detachment, humility and concern for others.

That makes the idea of service particularly relevant on a birthday.

The observance of Modi’s 76th birthday through some programmes centred on service, health, cleanliness, plantation and community activity reflects an interpretation of spirituality in which worship is accompanied by action.

As Prime Minister Narendra Modi completes 76 years of life, his years in office have coincided with a highly visible revival and redevelopment of several of India’s major spiritual and cultural centres and with efforts to give traditions such as Yoga a wider global platform. Supporters see these initiatives as a renewed assertion of India’s civilisational heritage, while debates around the relationship between religion, culture, politics and the state remain part of India’s democratic discourse.

Mumbai: What happens when a man surrounded by wealth, political power, security, expensive cars and social recognition suddenly leaves everything behind and walks onto the street as someone nobody recognises? For Maharashtra BJP MLA Parag Shah, one of the state’s wealthiest legislators, the answer came through an unusual spiritual experiment that transformed an ordinary day in Mumbai into a lesson about ego, humility, compassion and the temporary nature of material identity.

Shah, who declared assets worth more than ₹3,383 crore in his affidavit for the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly election, recently left behind his security personnel, vehicles and expensive belongings, changed his appearance and spent several hours on the streets of Ghatkopar dressed as a beggar. The exercise was reportedly undertaken on the advice of Jain spiritual guru Param Namramuni Gurudev during the spiritually significant Jain period of introspection and self-discipline. What followed was not merely an experiment in disguise, but an experience that raises a much deeper spiritual question: Who are we when everything through which the world recognises us is taken away?

On an ordinary day, Parag Shah is an MLA, businessman and wealthy public figure. People recognise him, approach him and may even wait for an opportunity to meet him. But when he stepped onto the same streets dressed as a beggar, all those identities disappeared. The people around him did not know his wealth, his political position or his social standing. To them, he was simply another man who appeared to have nothing and was asking others for help.

That reversal became one of the most striking aspects of Shah’s experience. He reportedly reflected that people who would ordinarily stand before him or wait to meet him suddenly appeared much bigger when he had to approach them asking for alms. He described what he experienced as the “reality of life.” His experience came after leaving behind his security, vehicles and expensive possessions and walking through Ghatkopar anonymously.

From a spiritual perspective, this is where the story becomes much more meaningful than the spectacle of a wealthy politician becoming a beggar for a day. Human beings spend much of their lives building identities around money, profession, designation, possessions, influence, appearance and social recognition. We begin to believe that these things define who we are. Yet spirituality has always reminded humanity that almost everything we call “mine” is temporary. Wealth can disappear, positions can change, power can pass to somebody else, physical beauty fades and even the body itself is temporary.

When these external identities are removed, what remains is the human being.

Perhaps the most touching moment of Shah’s experience came when an ordinary person reportedly gave him ₹20 and suggested that he buy something to eat. At another point, a food vendor gave him something to eat despite his apparent inability to pay. For someone whose declared assets run into thousands of crores, ₹20 would ordinarily mean almost nothing financially. But when Shah was standing on the street without access to his visible wealth or identity, that small amount represented something far more valuable: human compassion.

There is a profound spiritual irony in that moment. The person giving ₹20 almost certainly possessed vastly less material wealth than the person receiving it. Yet at that moment, the supposedly poorer person was the giver and the billionaire was the receiver. Material definitions of rich and poor had been temporarily reversed.

And that raises another important spiritual question: Who was truly rich at that moment?

Was it the person who possessed thousands of crores but was asking for help, or the person who may have possessed very little but still had enough compassion to share ₹20 with a stranger? Spirituality does not reject material prosperity, but it challenges us to rethink what prosperity actually means. A large bank balance may make someone financially wealthy, but generosity makes a person rich in another dimension. A person who has little but shares with someone in need possesses something that cannot be measured through an election affidavit, property valuation or bank statement.

The food vendor’s gesture carries the same message. He apparently did not know that the person before him was a wealthy MLA. He simply saw someone who seemed unable to pay and offered food. There was no expectation of political favour, publicity or reward. The act became meaningful precisely because the giver did not know the recipient’s real identity.

That is very close to the spiritual idea of seva—service without expectation. True kindness does not first ask whether the person receiving it is important. True compassion does not calculate what it will receive in return. When someone is hungry, we feed them. When someone is suffering, we help them. When someone feels alone, we offer support. Humanity itself becomes sufficient reason for action.

Seen through this lens, becoming a beggar for a day was less about pretending to be poor and more about temporarily stripping away the external layers through which society defines a person. When there is no luxury car, no security officer, no expensive clothing, no political introduction and nobody saying “MLA sahib,” the ego suddenly has much less material with which to construct its identity.

However, there is an equally important truth that must accompany the spiritual interpretation of this experiment. A wealthy person voluntarily living like a beggar for several hours cannot fully understand the reality of someone who lives with poverty, hunger or homelessness every day. For Shah, the experience had an ending. He could remove the makeup, return home and resume his normal life. Millions of poor people do not have that option. Their poverty is not an exercise in spiritual introspection; it is an everyday struggle for survival.

That distinction actually makes the spiritual lesson even more important. An experience of humility has value only when it creates lasting compassion. A spiritual exercise becomes meaningful when inner realisation changes outward behaviour. If temporarily experiencing vulnerability helps a person become more sensitive towards those who live with vulnerability permanently, then the experience can become more than symbolic.

For politicians, business leaders, celebrities, professionals and indeed anyone enjoying privilege, there is a larger lesson here. We often see society from the position we occupy within it. A person travelling in a luxury car sees a different Mumbai from someone sleeping beside the road. A person ordering food without looking at the price sees hunger differently from someone wondering whether there will be dinner tonight. A powerful person experiences human relationships differently from someone society routinely ignores.

Sometimes, changing where we stand changes what we are able to see.

Shah’s experience therefore invites all of us—not only wealthy people—to examine our own attachments. Our possessions may be smaller, but our ego can be equally large. We may become attached to our job title, house, car, appearance, social-media following, education, family status or professional success. We may unconsciously begin measuring ourselves and others through these external markers.
