Sonu Tyagi Counters Rahul Gandhi’s ‘80% Indians Are Non-Vegetarian’ Claim and ‘Non-Veg Food Is Delicious’ Remark

“Taste Cannot Be Greater Than Life”: Go Spiritual Founder Calls for Ahimsa, Compassion and Respect for Every Living Being

Mumbai/New Delhi: Sonu Tyagi, award-winning writer, director and producer and Founder of Go Spiritual and Approach Entertainment Group, has strongly countered Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s claim that “80% of Indians are non-vegetarian” and his remark that “Indian non-vegetarian food is delicious,” calling the 80% assertion a sweeping and misleading representation of India’s complex food habits and questioning why the life of an animal should be reduced to a matter of taste.

Gandhi made the remarks amid discussion over the vegetarian menu served at the BRICS Summit in New Delhi. Tyagi said both statements deserve scrutiny—not from a political perspective, but from the standpoint of facts, India’s spiritual traditions and compassion towards animals.

The claim that 80% of Indians are non-vegetarian is a sweeping way of presenting an extremely diverse country. Where does this 80% figure come from? India cannot be reduced to one convenient statistic. And describing non-vegetarian food as ‘delicious’ is a personal preference, not a universal truth,” Tyagi said.

Available survey evidence presents a considerably more complex picture. A nationally representative Pew Research Center survey of 29,999 Indian adults found that 39% identify as vegetarian, while 61% do not. More significantly, 81% of Indians limit meat consumption in some way—by being vegetarian, avoiding certain meats or abstaining from meat on particular days. Among Hindus, 44% identify as vegetarian, while 83% either identify as vegetarian or restrict meat in some form.

“Not identifying as strictly vegetarian does not mean that someone regularly eats meat or that non-vegetarian food defines their diet,” Tyagi said. “India has strict vegetarians, predominantly vegetarian families, occasional meat eaters and millions who abstain on religious days or avoid particular meats. Calling all of this ‘80% non-vegetarian India’ creates a misleading picture.

Tyagi said the issue becomes even more important when viewed through India’s Hindu and Sanatan spiritual heritage. Hindu society has diverse regional food traditions, including both vegetarian and non-vegetarian practices, but Ahimsa, Karuna, Daya, Sattvic living, fasting, vegetarian Prasad and respect for living beings have deep roots within Hindu and Sanatan Dharma.

“Hindus constitute India’s largest religious community, and there is enormous diversity within Hindu society. But we should not allow that diversity to erase the higher spiritual ideals of Ahimsa and Karuna. Sanatan Dharma encourages us to expand our consciousness and compassion towards all living beings,” Tyagi said.

Responding specifically to Gandhi’s “delicious” remark, Tyagi said: “Taste Cannot Be Greater Than Life. Something may taste delicious to a person, but what was the cost to another living creature? Should an animal lose its entire life for a few moments of pleasure on our tongue? Animals experience fear, pain and the instinct to survive. Spirituality asks us to recognise that life.”

Sonu Tyagi

He added that India has one of the world’s richest vegetarian culinary traditions, encompassing countless preparations based on vegetables, pulses, grains, millets, fruits, dairy products and traditional Sattvic foods.

Why should India feel apologetic about serving vegetarian food to world leaders? India can offer extraordinary cuisine without taking an animal’s life. That should be celebrated as a strength of Indian civilisation, not treated as inadequate representation,” Tyagi said.

Tyagi clarified that Go Spiritual does not believe in imposing vegetarianism or attacking people for their food choices.

We advocate; we do not impose. We appeal; we do not threaten. A vegetarian does not automatically become a better human being, and a non-vegetarian should never be hated or humiliated. But freedom of choice does not mean that we stop discussing the ethical consequences of our choices.”

Through its Go Veg campaign, Go Spiritual advocates vegetarianism, Ahimsa and animal compassion through awareness and voluntary transformation.

Even if 80% were non-vegetarian, would that make killing an animal compassionate? Morality cannot be decided by percentages. Majority behaviour does not automatically become an ethical ideal. Human consciousness evolves when we question whether our choices cause unnecessary suffering,” Tyagi said.

He concluded: “Rahul Gandhi is entitled to his personal food preferences, like every Indian. But India is greater than an ‘80% non-vegetarian’ statistic. Indian cuisine is greater than meat. And life is greater than taste. An animal’s life is greater than a few moments of taste. Let us choose compassion whenever we have the choice.

Sonu Tyagi on Durga Puja Food Row: ‘Hindu Spirituality Teaches Compassion — If We Worship the Divine Mother, Why Not Show Compassion to All...

Go Spiritual Founder says the higher ideals of Hindu and Sanatani spirituality are rooted in Ahimsa, Karuna and Sattvic living; advocates vegetarianism through awareness and compassion rather than force

Mumbai/New Delhi: Amid the continuing debate over non-vegetarian food during Durga Puja, Sonu Tyagi, Founder of Go Spiritual and Approach Entertainment, has called for the controversy to move beyond politics, personalities and regional confrontation and become a deeper conversation about Hindu spirituality, Sanatani values, Ahimsa, animal compassion and conscious food choices.

The controversy has sparked a wider discussion around food, faith and regional traditions, particularly in West Bengal. While some have appealed to devotees to avoid fish and meat during the sacred festival period, others have defended Bengal’s distinctive religious, cultural and culinary traditions. Tyagi said India’s diversity should be respected, but the debate also provides an opportunity to reflect on the deeper purpose of spirituality.

Hindu spirituality teaches compassion. If we worship the Divine Mother, why not show compassion to all living beings? Durga Puja and Navratri celebrate Shakti, devotion and the victory of good over evil. Worship should not end at a temple or pandal. If our devotion is meaningful, it should gradually make us kinder and more compassionate towards human beings, animals and nature,” Tyagi said.

Tyagi clarified that Go Spiritual does not want to enter into personal or political arguments involving any religious leader, politician, organisation or party. Instead, the organisation wants to focus on a larger spiritual question: whether faith and religious practice can inspire people to reduce avoidable suffering and live more consciously.

According to Tyagi, Hinduism and Sanatan Dharma encompass diverse traditions, customs and philosophical schools, and food habits have varied across communities and historical periods. However, acknowledging that diversity should not prevent Hindus and Sanatanis from discussing the higher spiritual ideals of Ahimsa, Daya, Karuna, Sattva, self-restraint and reverence for life.

History may tell us what different people ate or practised at different points in time, but Dharma should also inspire us to think about what we ought to become. Spirituality is a journey towards greater awareness, purity, self-restraint and compassion. For Go Spiritual, vegetarianism is a natural expression of that journey,” Tyagi said.

He pointed to the importance of Sattvic food, vegetarian Prasad and vegetarian practices followed across numerous Hindu temples, Vaishnava traditions and spiritual institutions. Go Spiritual has previously argued that selective historical examples of meat consumption or animal sacrifice should not overshadow the extensive traditions of Ahimsa, compassion and vegetarian living within Hindu and Sanatani thought.

Sonu Tyagi

Tyagi stressed, however, that vegetarianism should never become a source of ego or moral superiority. “Being vegetarian does not automatically make someone a better human being, and eating non-vegetarian food does not define somebody’s entire character. But we should still ask a simple question: when we have the possibility of nourishing ourselves without taking an animal’s life, why should we not consider the more compassionate choice?

For Tyagi, Ahimsa extends beyond avoiding violence between human beings. Animals experience pain, fear and an instinct to survive, and spirituality should encourage greater sensitivity towards their suffering. “An animal’s life is greater than a few moments of taste. We cannot eliminate every form of harm from human existence, but that cannot become an excuse for avoidable suffering,” he said.

At the same time, Tyagi strongly opposed imposing vegetarianism through intimidation or cultural confrontation. “We advocate; we do not impose. We appeal; we do not threaten. If we speak about Ahimsa while insulting another human being, we contradict the philosophy we claim to represent. You cannot create compassion through force; you can awaken it through awareness.”

Tyagi also cautioned against making food a test of religious identity. “No food debate should become a certificate of who is or is not a Hindu or Sanatani. Hindu and Sanatani traditions are far too vast and profound to be reduced to somebody’s plate. Respecting cultural diversity and advocating vegetarianism are not contradictory. We can respect people while encouraging them to consider more compassionate choices.”

Referring to Durga Puja, Tyagi said worship of Maa Durga as the Divine Mother offers a powerful opportunity for introspection. “When we seek the Divine Mother’s protection, strength and compassion, can that feeling of motherhood also expand towards other living beings? True spirituality should enlarge the circle of our compassion. India does not need another angry argument over food. India needs a compassionate conversation.”

Sonu Tyagi

Narendra Modi at 76: From Yoga to Kashi, Ayodhya and Kedarnath, Taking India’s Spiritual Heritage to the World

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi turned 76 on September 17, 2026, with birthday wishes coming from across India’s political and public life. Born on September 17, 1950, in Vadnagar, Gujarat, Modi has spent more than two decades in elected executive office, first as Chief Minister of Gujarat and, since 2014, as Prime Minister of India.

For a spiritual and wellness publication, however, his birthday also offers an occasion to look at a distinctive dimension of his years in national leadership: the prominent place given to Yoga, pilgrimage centres, temples, Buddhist heritage, Indian philosophy and the idea of “seva” — service — as part of the country’s cultural conversation.

Modi has himself spoken publicly about spirituality as an influence on his life. In an interaction published by the Prime Minister’s Office, he recalled that his inclination towards spirituality began at a young age and referred to the Ramakrishna Paramahamsa and Swami Vivekananda principle of “Jan Seva Hi Prabhu Seva” — service to people is service to the Divine — as an important inspiration.

That relationship between spirituality and service has continued to appear in his public language. In 2026, while speaking at the inauguration of Seva Teerth and Kartavya Bhavan in New Delhi, Modi invoked the idea of “Seva Paramo Dharmah”, describing service as a fundamental duty and connecting governance with responsibility towards people.

The spiritual theme is visible even in some of the events surrounding his birthday this year. In Varanasi, his Lok Sabha constituency and one of Hinduism’s most sacred cities, 76 priests performed a Ganga Abhishek to mark his 76th birthday. In Gujarat, religious and community programmes included prayers, diya-lighting and other events. Separately, public-service campaigns around the birthday have included health camps, blood donation, cleanliness and plantation activities.

Taking Yoga From India to the World

Perhaps the most internationally visible spiritual and wellness initiative associated with Modi’s premiership has been the International Day of Yoga.

During his address to the United Nations General Assembly in September 2014, Modi proposed an International Day of Yoga. The UN General Assembly subsequently adopted June 21 as the International Day of Yoga, with 177 countries co-sponsoring the resolution. The first International Day of Yoga was observed in 2015, with Modi leading a mass yoga programme in New Delhi.

Over the years, he has repeatedly presented Yoga not simply as physical exercise but as a holistic tradition connecting the body, mind, individual consciousness and wellbeing. In June 2026, he again highlighted Yoga’s roots in India’s spiritual heritage, while also sharing a Sanskrit verse honouring Maharishi Patanjali and stressing Yoga’s role in keeping the body healthy and the mind calm.

The globalisation of Yoga is significant from a spiritual perspective because it has taken an ancient Indian discipline into public spaces, schools, institutions and communities around the world. Yoga today is practised in many different religious, secular, fitness and wellness contexts, but its philosophical origins remain deeply connected with India’s spiritual traditions.

Kashi Vishwanath Dham: Reconnecting a Sacred City

Another major initiative during Modi’s tenure has been the redevelopment of the Shri Kashi Vishwanath Dham in Varanasi.

When Modi inaugurated the redeveloped complex in December 2021, he described it as more than a physical structure, calling it a symbol of India’s Sanatan culture and spiritual heritage. The project significantly transformed the area surrounding the historic Kashi Vishwanath Temple and improved connectivity between the temple and the Ganga.

Kashi occupies a unique place in India’s spiritual imagination. For millions of devotees, it is not simply a destination but a teerth — a sacred space associated with Lord Shiva, liberation, knowledge and the timeless relationship between life and death.

The redevelopment of pilgrimage infrastructure in Kashi has also represented a broader policy approach described by the government as “Virasat Bhi, Vikas Bhi” — heritage alongside development. In June 2026, Modi said that efforts ranging from bringing antiquities back to India to strengthening spiritual and pilgrimage infrastructure were intended to reconnect people with India’s traditions.

Mahakal Lok and the Spiritual Consciousness of Ujjain

The development of Shri Mahakal Lok in Ujjain has been another prominent spiritual heritage project associated with Modi’s tenure.

While dedicating the first phase of the project in 2022, Modi linked the restoration and development of India’s pilgrimage centres with the revival of cultural and spiritual consciousness. His address also referred to work at Kashi Vishwanath, Somnath, Kedarnath-Badrinath and other places of faith.

Ujjain, home to the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, has been a centre of Hindu spirituality, Shaivism, pilgrimage and learning for centuries. The Mahakal Lok project sought to expand the experience and infrastructure around this ancient centre of worship while presenting its religious stories and symbolism to contemporary visitors.

Kedarnath and the Legacy of Adi Shankaracharya

In the Himalayas, the redevelopment of Kedarnath Dham has similarly combined pilgrimage infrastructure with the restoration of spiritual heritage.

In November 2021, Modi inaugurated the reconstructed Samadhi of Adi Shankaracharya and unveiled a statue of the philosopher-saint at Kedarnath. During his address, he spoke about Adi Shankaracharya’s contribution to Indian philosophy and his emphasis on human welfare and a holistic understanding of life.

The symbolism is significant. Adi Shankaracharya occupies an extraordinary position in India’s philosophical history, particularly in the Advaita Vedanta tradition, and is traditionally associated with the revival and consolidation of important spiritual centres across India.

For modern pilgrims, improved infrastructure at places such as Kedarnath can make difficult sacred journeys more accessible, although development in ecologically sensitive Himalayan regions also requires continuing attention to environmental sustainability and carrying capacity.

Ayodhya and the Ram Mandir

The consecration of Ram Lalla at the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya on January 22, 2024 became one of the most prominent religious events of Modi’s premiership.

Ahead of the Pran Pratishtha ceremony, Modi announced that he would undertake an 11-day special spiritual observance, describing his role in the ceremony as a major responsibility and speaking about preparing himself spiritually for the occasion.

The Ram Mandir has profound religious significance for its devotees and has also been at the centre of a long and politically consequential historical dispute. Its consecration therefore carried religious, cultural and political meanings that different Indians may interpret differently. From a spiritual perspective, however, Ayodhya’s renewed prominence has brought the teachings and symbolism associated with Lord Ram — including dharma, maryada, duty, sacrifice and service — back into widespread public discussion.

India’s Buddhist Heritage and the Message of Compassion

Modi’s cultural-spiritual outreach has not been limited to Hindu pilgrimage traditions. His government has also highlighted India’s connection with Buddhism and Lord Buddha’s teachings.

In 2026, Modi inaugurated an international exposition of sacred Piprahwa relics associated with Bhagwan Buddha in New Delhi. Speaking there, he described India’s connection with Buddhist countries as extending beyond diplomacy and economics to bonds of faith and spirituality. He also pointed to infrastructure and visitor facilities being developed at Buddhist sites including Bodh Gaya, Sarnath, Shravasti, Kapilvastu, Kushinagar, Sanchi and others.

In July 2026, Modi welcomed Sarnath’s inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List, highlighting its association with Buddha and the ideals of wisdom, compassion and harmony.

Buddhism gives India a particularly powerful spiritual connection with many countries across Asia. Buddha’s teachings of compassion, mindfulness, the Middle Path and freedom from suffering also resonate strongly with contemporary conversations around inner wellbeing and mental peace.

Spirituality Beyond Ritual

The larger spiritual question raised by these initiatives goes beyond the construction or redevelopment of temples and pilgrimage corridors.

Indian spirituality has traditionally placed great emphasis on the transformation of the individual. Temples, sacred rivers, pilgrimages, Yoga, meditation and rituals can provide pathways, but the deeper teachings repeatedly return to values such as seva, compassion, self-discipline, truthfulness, detachment, humility and concern for others.

That makes the idea of service particularly relevant on a birthday.

The observance of Modi’s 76th birthday through some programmes centred on service, health, cleanliness, plantation and community activity reflects an interpretation of spirituality in which worship is accompanied by action.

As Prime Minister Narendra Modi completes 76 years of life, his years in office have coincided with a highly visible revival and redevelopment of several of India’s major spiritual and cultural centres and with efforts to give traditions such as Yoga a wider global platform. Supporters see these initiatives as a renewed assertion of India’s civilisational heritage, while debates around the relationship between religion, culture, politics and the state remain part of India’s democratic discourse.

For Go Spiritual, the enduring message of any spiritual journey remains larger than an individual or a government: spirituality ultimately finds its deepest expression when inner awareness becomes compassion, responsibility and service to humanity.

On Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday, that timeless Indian idea — Seva as Sadhana, service as a spiritual practice — offers a message that can extend beyond politics and speak to everyone.

Ganesh Chaturthi 2026: Welcome Lord Ganesha by Removing the Obstacles Within

Go Spiritual says the festival of Vighnaharta is not only about bringing Ganesha home, but also about overcoming ego, anger, greed and negativity while embracing wisdom, compassion and a more spiritual way of life

Mumbai/New Delhi: As homes, temples and public pandals prepare to welcome Lord Ganesha, Ganesh Chaturthi 2026 offers an opportunity to celebrate not only one of India’s most loved festivals, but also its deeper spiritual message. This year, Ganesh Chaturthi falls on Monday, September 14, beginning the Ganeshotsav celebrations that culminate with Ganesh Visarjan on Anant Chaturdashi.

For Go Spiritual, Ganesh Chaturthi is much more than the installation of a beautiful Ganesha idol, elaborate decorations, sweets, music and processions. The festival carries a timeless message for modern life: before asking Vighnaharta, the remover of obstacles, to remove difficulties from our path, we should also identify the obstacles that exist within ourselves.

Ego, anger, jealousy, greed, hatred, fear, intolerance and uncontrolled desires can become some of the biggest obstacles in human life. Ganesh Chaturthi can therefore become a period of inner reflection—a time to ask what we need to remove from our minds and lives to become calmer, kinder and wiser human beings.

Lord Ganesha is traditionally worshipped as Vighnaharta, the remover of obstacles, and as a deity associated with wisdom, intelligence, prosperity and auspicious new beginnings. Ganesh Chaturthi marks his birth and is celebrated with great devotion across India, with especially prominent celebrations in Maharashtra and several other states.

Every aspect of Lord Ganesha can also inspire spiritual reflection. His large head reminds us to think with wisdom; his large ears can remind us to listen more carefully; and his small eyes can represent concentration and focus. His association with new beginnings reminds us that transformation is always possible. Whatever mistakes we may have made in the past, spiritual life gives us an opportunity to begin again with greater awareness.

In today’s world, this message has particular relevance. People are surrounded by constant information, competition, social-media comparisons, material ambitions and everyday stress. We often ask for external success without first creating inner peace. We want obstacles outside us to disappear while sometimes ignoring anger, anxiety, ego and negativity within.

Ganesh Chaturthi reminds us that real success is not only about achieving more; it is also about becoming better.

The festival traditionally begins with the installation of Ganesha murtis in homes and public pandals. Devotees offer prayers, flowers and sweets, particularly modaks, and participate in aartis and community celebrations. The festival eventually concludes with Ganesh Visarjan, when the murti is taken in procession for immersion, accompanied by the beloved chant of “Ganpati Bappa Morya.”

Visarjan itself carries a profound spiritual lesson.

We welcome Ganesha with enormous love, worship him for several days and then finally allow the physical form to go. Symbolically, this can remind us of one of spirituality’s most important truths: everything in the material world is temporary.

Possessions, positions, success, difficulties and even circumstances change with time. Visarjan can teach us to love deeply without becoming permanently attached to physical forms. The murti returns to nature, but devotion remains within the heart.

Go Spiritual also believes that a festival dedicated to the Divine should encourage greater respect for nature and all living beings. Devotion and environmental responsibility should complement each other. Choosing eco-conscious celebrations, reducing unnecessary waste, avoiding pollution and treating animals and the natural world with compassion can make Ganeshotsav even more meaningful.

The spiritual meaning of Ganesh Chaturthi can also extend into our homes and relationships. Removing obstacles should include removing bitterness between family members, forgiving where possible, listening to one another and making space for compassion. A prayer before Lord Ganesha becomes even more meaningful when it inspires positive change in our everyday behaviour.

The festival also has a powerful tradition of bringing communities together. Public Ganesh celebrations became an important vehicle for social unity during India’s freedom movement, particularly after Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak helped transform Ganeshotsav into a major public celebration in the late nineteenth century. Today, that spirit of togetherness can be carried forward through community service, kindness, charity and support for people who need help.

Go Spiritual believes devotees can make this Ganesh Chaturthi a personal spiritual beginning. Along with praying for prosperity, success and the removal of difficulties, people can make a simple inner resolution: remove one negative habit and adopt one positive quality.

Replace anger with patience. Replace ego with humility. Replace hatred with compassion. Replace excessive desire with contentment. Replace indifference with kindness. Replace fear with faith.

That may be among the most meaningful offerings we can make to Lord Ganesha.

As millions welcome Ganesha with the words “Ganpati Bappa Morya,” Go Spiritual’s message for Ganesh Chaturthi is simple: welcome Lord Ganesha into your home, but also allow his wisdom to enter your mind and heart. Pray for the obstacles ahead to disappear—but also work to remove the anger, ego, greed and negativity within. That is where the deeper journey of Vighnaharta begins.
