About the Internship

The North Eastern Council (NEC), Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region, Government of India, has announced its Internship Policy 2026. This program is designed to provide students with practical exposure to regional planning, socio-economic development, and governance in the North Eastern states of India. Interns will gain insights into cultural, environmental, and developmental dynamics while contributing to NEC’s projects.

Objectives

  • Provide hands-on experience in regional planning and development.
  • Allow students to apply academic knowledge to real-world scenarios.
  • Foster young talent for mutual benefit of NEC and interns.

Eligibility Criteria

  • UG students: Completed/appeared in 2nd year exams with minimum 55% in Class 12.
  • PG students/Research Scholars: Completed/appeared in 1st year exams with minimum 55% in graduation.
  • Fresh graduates: May apply within 6 months of result declaration with 60% or above cumulative marks.
  • Reservation:
    • 50% seats reserved for students from the North Eastern Region (NER).
    • 50% seats reserved for women, as far as possible.

Application Process

  • Apply via the NEC online portal (or hard copy submission until portal is functional).
  • Required documents: Resume, Statement of Purpose, Academic transcripts, NOC from institution.
  • Applications can be made 6 months in advance but not later than 1 month before internship start date.
  • Selection based on:
    • Academic merit (40%)
    • Relevance of field of study (20%)
    • Interest in socio-economic development of NER (20%)
    • Computer literacy (20%)

Internship Structure

  • Interns will be assigned to specific departments/projects based on interest.
  • Each intern will have a mentor.
  • Activities include project work, meetings, training sessions, and report submission.
  • Certificate of Completion will be issued by NEC upon successful completion.

Some of the research and project topics include:

  • Agriculture: Business potential of indigenous crops, dairy cooperatives in hilly terrains, agri-tourism, beekeeping as livelihood.
  • Irrigation & Flood Control: Climate change impact on flooding, sustainable irrigation, smart drainage solutions.
  • Tourism & Industries: Tourism carrying capacity, branding destinations, tribal homestay standardization.
  • Science & Technology: Blockchain for supply chain transparency, drone technology for disaster management, AI & ML applications.
  • Health: Telemedicine adoption, nutrition gaps in tribal diets, mental health in conflict areas, medical tourism.
  • Transport: EV charging infrastructure, border road development, feasibility of cable cars in remote areas.

Certification & Attendance

  • Minimum 75% attendance required.
  • Interns must submit a final report and may present seminars.
  • Successful interns will receive a completion certificate from NEC.
