The India-Middle East food corridor is an initiative that promises to transform and revolutionize the diplomatic, trade, and Economic relations between India and the Middle East.

In this episode, we will explore the economic and geopolitical significance of the food corridor. Plus, we will briefly touch upon the importance of the I2U2.

The economic and geopolitical significance of the food corridor heavily relies on the separate roles of the three countries. The UAE and Israel are already playing a significant role in India’s food distribution and production systems. While the roles of India, Israel, and the UAE are different, they do not run parallel to each other but are intertwined. If one card is pulled, the entire system will come crashing down, which is why it is vital that the three countries put their best foot forward to ensure that the food corridor performs at its optimum.

The success of the food corridor relies on the normalization of the Israel-Emirati relations. After signing the “Abraham Accords” in September 2020 the Israel-Emirati relations are seeing new heights with the possibilities of new bilateral ties. For the food corridor to become a success, the relationship between Israel and the UAE had to be normalized.

The US is also becoming an important part of the food corridor through I2U2. The I2U2 is a “minilateral” relation involving India, Israel, the US, and the UAE. The coming together of the four nations through mutually beneficial agreements has opened up new avenues whilst challenging the Chinese presence in the region.

While it is true that the US is enriching the food corridor through its presence, the development of the food corridor is through organically developed relations between the three Asian countries.

An article published on Middle East Institute mentions the following:

“Although the U.S. is becoming a participant through the I2U2 format, the strategic power of the India-Middle East Food Corridor derives from the fact that it developed organically among the three Asian countries themselves, through private sector, joint venture investments carefully cultivated via bilateral public-private partnerships. Although not requiring Washington as a benefactor, the United States’ participation in the corridor could prove beneficial as the U.S. seeks to bolster its presence in the strategic architecture of the Indo-Pacific.”

In the next episode, we will explore the origins of the food corridor and its organic development.
