About ICLAA
The Indian Council of Legal Aid and Advice (ICLAA), established in 1972, is one of India’s oldest legal aid organisations. It was founded by distinguished legal luminaries including Justice Y.V. Chandrachud, Justice P.N. Bhagwati, and Shri H.R. Gokhale, with the vision of promoting access to justice for all. The organisation is presently chaired by Senior Advocate Sanjay Parikh.
About the Fellowship
The Justice S. Rangarajan Legal Aid Fellowship is a part-time, in-person programme based in New Delhi, commencing in May 2026 for a duration of three months.
The Fellowship is designed to equip early-career lawyers with practical exposure to legal aid delivery, litigation strategy, and public interest law, under the mentorship of experienced practitioners. The programme will be conducted primarily at the Delhi High Court under the auspices of ICLAA.
Following the successful completion of its earlier batches, the Indian Council of Legal Aid and Advice (ICLAA) is pleased to invite applications for the third batch of the Justice S. Rangarajan Legal Aid Fellowship. This Fellowship offers a unique opportunity for first-generation law graduates to gain structured, hands-on experience in legal aid practice and public interest litigation.
Eligibility
- Applicants must be first-generation law graduates with 0–3 years of litigation experience;
- A demonstrated interest in human rights, access to justice, or public interest litigation is essential.
Responsibilities
Selected Fellows will:
- Provide legal advice and assistance to individuals approaching ICLAA;
- Conduct legal research on issues of public importance;
- Liaise with grassroots organisations lacking adequate legal representation;
- Assist in organising and implementing legal awareness programmes in underserved communities.
Objectives of the Fellowship
- To provide hands-on experience in litigation and legal aid services;
- To develop a deeper understanding of socio-legal issues, including environmental justice, gender rights, human rights violations, and the rights of undertrials;
- To encourage long-term engagement with pro bono work and access to justice initiatives.
Fellowship Structure and Benefits
- Fellows are required to contribute approximately 20 hours per week in person at ICLAA’s office in Delhi;
- Continuous mentorship will be provided by senior advocates and public interest practitioners;
- Fellows will receive a Certificate of Completion upon successful completion of the programme.
Stipend
A stipend of Rs. 10,000 per month will be provided
