Is the India-Europe Trade Route Bringing Arab Nations Closer?

The new trade route between India and Europe is an effort to bring Middle Eastern nations such as Saudi Arabia and the UAE closer to the Western nations.

While the Trans project comes loaded with endless possibilities, the Arab nations see the project differently.

Earlier this month, at the G20 Summit, the European nations, the US, India, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE declared that they wanted to create an economic corridor linking various parts of the Indian subcontinent with the Middle East and into Europe. The desire to boost the economy gave birth to the idea of the IMEC or the India-Middle East Economic Corridor.

The new Trans Corridor will use rail and sea ports to link various parts of the region.

Khalid al-Falih, Saudi investment minister, in G20 meeting said “People talk about the silk route, the spice route of India through the Arabian Peninsula, but this is going to be more significant and relevant because it’s going to be about new energy, data, connectivity, human resources, aviation routes and it’s about aligning countries that are of the same mind and same vision.”

While it is true that the new Trans Corridor will boost the economies of the involved parties, it is being seeing as another effort of the West, particularly the US, to counter China’s Belt & Road Initiative. Furthermore, it is also an attempt to bring the Arab nations closer to the West.

Aligning nations closer to the West is going to be tricky because countries involved in the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor are not following the traditional geopolitical order. Countries such as Israel will not align with the West to counter Russia or China.

Representatives of various Arab nations mentioned that they do not want to be a part of either side; however, they would happily participate in projects that serve their countries’ interests.

Despite various sanctions, Saudi Arabia and the UAE are cooperating with Russia. The Arab nations have also expressed their interest in joining BRICS.

An article published on DW mentions the following:

“What appears to be the open nature of the planned IMEC will make it simpler for interested nations to join in and therefore also easier for them to be integrated into the community of participating countries, according to an analysis by Mohammed Soliman, director of the strategic technologies program at the Middle East Institute, that was published in the Middle East online magazine Al Monitor earlier this month.”
