Bollywood Music: Which is Better, the 50s, 60s or the Ones Trending? Part Three

Film songs are a part and parcel of everyday life in India; however, it has completely changed in recent years.

In the last two episodes, we focused on the Bollywood Music created in the 50s and the 60s. In this episode we will explore the 70s.

While the 60s will be remembered for Shammi Kapoor and Dev Anand and the era’s soulful music, the 70s will be remembered for the birth of India’s first superstar, Rajesh Khanna. From Amar Prem to Kati Patang to Anand, India’s first superstar is known to act in seventeen super hit films in a row.

The films had some of the best music of the time. The duo of Kishore Kumar and Rajesh Khanna gave some of the immortal tunes like “Zindagi Ek Safar,” “Kuch Toh Log Kahenge” and “Meri Sapnbo Ki Rani.”

The decade is also remembered for the birth of the superstar of the century, Amitabh Bachchan. Amitabh Bachchan along with Kishore Kumar and R.D. Burman gave India and the world some of the greatest hits. Songs like “ O Saathi Re,” “Do Lafzon Ki Hai” and “Jahan Teri Yeh Nazar Hai.”

Sholay, one of the biggest blockbusters of all time saw the amalgamation of some of the finest actors and singers of the time. From Amitabh to Kishore to Helen and Amzad Khan, Sholay remains the icing on the cake for Indian cinema. Songs like “Yeh Dosti” and “Mehbooba Mehbooba” are still a hit.

An article published on The Times of India mentions the following:

“…We all have our genres and some of us like the classics whereas others like popular film music, but what we can all agree on is that music from the golden age of Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar is evergreen. Music from the 70s was a genre that combined the developing India after Independence with the India that spoke the language of centuries old musical compilations.”

The music of the 70’s was well crafted with attention to the smallest details. One wrong note during the recording and the entire orchestra along with the singer had to retake. Recording one song demanded months of practice and dedication.

An article published on Scoop Whoop mentions the following:

“Each song read as if a carefully crafted, meticulously mastered and perfectly executed symphony, teaching us the lessons of life through another tongue. Be it talking about the fleeting nature of life, or serenading the love of your life, 70s music had a vision. What’s more, each artist, musician, lyricist, and composer expressed it in his or her own way.”
