Six counties will join BRICS, of which four are Middle Eastern. With BRICS expanding itself, is it the beginning of good times for the “Global South”?
In this final episode, we will explore India’s role in BRICS and how it has managed to keep China’s maneuvers under check.
While China wants to include nations in the group that align with its ideologies which would help them create a unipolar world, BRICS, according to India, are not a group that is opposed to the West. While a significant portion of the media believed that India would remain silent on the expansion of the group, it quietly created rule-based strategies to include nations in the group which helped the group retain its multipolar characteristics
Twenty-two countries had applied for membership in the group; however, India’s ruled-based entry only allowed six countries to be inducted.
An article published on The Times of India mentions the following:
“… India has strengthened its position in the BRICS that will ensure that it does not become a tool of China. Out of 22 countries that applied for BRICS membership, only six were admitted, and this reflects India’s growing ability to check China’s manoeuvres in the organisation. India will require maintaining the same level of vigilance, when BRICS considers further expansion.”
India’s adoption of active foreign policy is paving a path for the group to contribute positively to global economic growth.
In Johannesburg, PM Modi pointed out how India had given BRICS new direction in the cooperation of MSMEs, the Railway Research Network, and the BRICS database. PM MODI gave five critical suggestions which further the development of BRICS nations.
The Times of India article mentions:
“…he gave five constructive suggestions for further broadening cooperation among the member countries. These included the creation of a BRICS Space Exploration Consortium for global good in areas like space research and weather monitoring; enhancing cooperation in education, skill development, and technology to make societies ready to face future challenges; skill mapping to identify each other’s strengths to complement each other in the journey of development; the creation of the International Big Cat Alliance for their protection; and the creation of a repository of traditional medicine…”
India is rapidly making progress in leaving a positive impact at the global level. Be it BRICS or G20, countries are paying close attention to India’s suggestions. While countries like China, with their authoritative ideologies, want to create an unipolar world, India has been successful at showing the benefits of a multilateral world.
