Both Forensic and Criminal psychology help law enforcement solve crime effectively. Without the two, law enforcement would lose its limbs. From the CBI to narcotics to IB, Forensic and criminal psychology plays a crucial role in solving cases.

Until a few years ago, my knowledge, like most people, about forensic and criminal psychology was based on films and TV series. I was mesmerized by how detectives and police solved gruesome crimes using forensic and criminal psychology. However, my romance with detective and crime TV series was over once I got to know about these two very different fields of study.

The two fields are related in the sense that they serve as important limbs for law enforcement, but the approach is very different. Both involve one-on-one interviews, extensive research, and data collection.

Let us now look at the subjects individually:

Forensic Psychology

Forensic Psychologists put their knowledge to the test during legal situations. Forensic experts assess people involved in crime from a psychological perspective.

An article published on Forbes mentions the following:

“Forensic psychologists aid in investigations, conduct psychological research and create intervention programs. They may also specialize in areas such as civil, criminal or family casework. Forensic psychologists can be called on to give expert testimony in court as well.”

Criminal Psychology

Criminal Psychology is a broad subject that involves the study of how a criminal behaves and what leads them to do things they do.

The Forbes article mentions:

“Criminal psychologists often partner with law enforcement agencies to help profile criminals. This may involve reviewing case files and researching other information relevant to a criminal case. Criminal psychologists can also assist law enforcement in the process of interrogating suspects.”

Criminal Psychology Vs. Forensic Psychology

Criminal and forensic psychologists work for law enforcement and try to understand criminal behaviors and tendencies. However, there are some differences.

Criminal psychologists focus on criminal behavior such as conducting and evaluating reports. Forensic experts often involve themselves with criminal and Civil law.

The Forbes article mentions:

“Criminal psychologists often partner with law enforcement agencies to help profile criminals. This may involve reviewing case files and researching other information relevant to a criminal case. Criminal psychologists can also assist law enforcement in the process of interrogating suspects.”

Both the subjects are varied and professionals involved have very defined roles. We will discuss more on these subjects in the next episodes.
