Modern criminology is changing and reshaping various previously held theories about crimes. While pink-collar crime or crime committed by women is on the rise, men still hold a significantly larger percentage.
Criminology is a subject that helps people understand various social and individual factors associated with crime and criminals. It also explores various psychological factors associated with people who perpetuate criminal activities.
According to criminology, men commit violent acts more than women. Men are also more likely to be victims of physical violence way more than women. However, there are certain categories of crime where women are more likely to be the victims.
In crimes such as rape, domestic violence, and familial, the number of women victims was far greater than men.
The number of male prisoners outnumbers female prisoners by a huge margin.
Why are more men involved with violent crimes?
Modern-day criminology is of the opinion that apart from physiology, the social engagement of the genders can tell us about the reasons behind men being associated with violent crimes. Men are more likely to associate with antisocial peers. Men are also more likely to find themselves in dangerous or violent situations.
An article published in The Conversation mentions the following:
“…Known as developmental and life course criminology, it suggests the causes of crime are a result of a linking of individual characteristics, such as impulsiveness, with a person’s environmental factors such as their family, schooling, religion, neighborhood and the way they were parented, including any exposure to neglect and maltreatment…”
At the hormonal level, the levels of testosterone are linked with people committing crimes.
Bruce Conn, psychologist with Coliseum Medical Center, says, “On the hormonal level, we talk about hormones and women but we miss the big change to understand hormones in men because testosterone is a factor here and it just does something different that we need to be aware of.”
High levels of testosterone help a man take more risks, which directly influences his success in social life. High levels of testosterone make people aggressive, which can be extremely helpful during survival situations; however, it also makes the person more prone to commit a violent crime.
“I think culturally, we socialize women to be more receptive, more kind, more caring. If you think in terms of feelings, a lot of times, men aren’t socialized to have all the sweet feelings. Men are socialized to only feel anger,” says Conn.
