It’s not exactly a secret anymore — Bruno Fernandes has been carrying Manchester United through thick and thin this season.

In a campaign where United have often looked like a team searching for identity, the Portuguese playmaker has been the constant.

And now, he’s on the brink of Premier League history.

One Assist Away From Immortality

Fernandes has quietly put together a sensational 2025/26 season, racking up 19 assists in the Premier League, the most in the league.

That puts him just one shy of the all-time single-season record of 20, jointly held by two legends: Arsenal’s Thierry Henry and Man City’s Kevin De Bruyne.

And of course, the thought of taking the crown away from the two is on Bruno’s mind.

“Of course, it’s (the assists record) on my mind, I won’t lie about that,” Fernandes admitted to Gary Neville on Sky Sports.

“In the beginning, it wasn’t. But I started coming closer and closer… now I’m just one away.”

No Chasing, Just Creating

Despite being within touching distance of history, Fernandes insists he won’t let the milestone dictate his game.

“It’s not going to change the way I play,” he said. “I am one of the creators of the team… I will always try to create and help my team score goals.”

“And if I have a chance to score a goal, I’ll not stop and think ‘Oh my god, the assist record’.”

No “Pires Moment” Coming

Naturally, fans have already started imagining ways Fernandes might chase that final assist, including cheeky recreations of the infamous Robert Pires-Henry penalty routine gone wrong.

Fernandes, though, shut that down with a laugh.

“I’ve seen people say I would just tap it to the side… but I will never do that because I am too afraid of missing,” he joked. “I will take my penalty as normal as always.”

Possibly Joining Elite Company

Even without breaking the record, Fernandes knows what this moment represents.

“We are talking about Kevin and Thierry… two of the best players the Premier League has seen,” he said.

“To be up there with their names… I’m very proud of that.”

With four games left, history feels inevitable.

And if United close strong, possibly clinching a Champions League spot, don’t be surprised if Fernandes also enters the PFA Player of the Year conversation.
