Found in various states of India, Adivasis are original communities living in close proximity to forests. These indigenous tribes live far away from modernity and have a distinct way of living.
Who are Adivasis?
Adivasi literally means original inhabitants. Found in states like Jharkhand, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, North-Eastern states, etc, these original inhabitants of India for 8 percent of the total population. There are over 60 Adivasi tribes, and have a distinct society without any particular hierarchy. While modern society is leaping forward, in terms of technology and invention, Adivasis live in an alternate arrangement far away from the so-called cutting-edge society.
An article published on Geek for Geeks mentions the following:
“Adivasis have an alternate arrangement of normal practices and ways of behaving than our cutting-edge society. They have their own dialects and vernaculars, types of self-government, and their own local religions and practices also. They typically live in little gatherings in the woods or at the edge of backwoods.”
When industrialization began in India, the lands and properties of Adivasis were taken advantage of in the name of science and progress. A large population of the Adivasis was forced to leave their properties to relocate elsewhere. Despite the atrocities faced by the original inhabitants of the land, they continued with their culture and tradition.
On the brighter side, the government of India continues to protect and provide for the Adivasis. Let us look at some of them:
There are several provisions under the constitution of India that safeguard the interest of Adivasis. We will focus on various government policies and constitutional provisions in another episode.
In addition to the constitution providing relief to Adivasis, there are several grants and monetary opportunities that tribes have access to.
The Geek for Geeks article mentions:
“The Central Government grants to meriting understudies for higher examinations in outside nations. Seventeen and a half percent of the legitimacy grants are allowed by the Center, to merit understudies of lower pay gatherings.”
