From rural entrepreneurship to applying scientific approaches to agricultural practices, a robust rural ecosystem will boost India’s economic growth.

Mahatma Gandhi said real India lives in its villages. While more and more people are leaving their villages for urban India, a significant number still reside in rural areas. According to data from the World Bank, 64.13 percent of the population resides in rural India.

Various programs have enabled people living in rural areas to improve their overall quality of life. Marginal farmers in the central Indian tribal belt are turning into millionaires by integrating technology and creating market linkages.

An article published on the The Times of India mentions the following:

“Tripling incomes of the communities of Jharkhand, Odisha, Gujarat and Maharashtra were possible by training them in scientific ways of agricultural practices; bringing them together through focused women-led community institutions; linking them to markets for better pricing; and ensuring they engage with their stakeholders for quality inputs, services and market linkages.”

In some North Eastern states, such as Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, and Nagaland, raising pigs in the backyard has become an opportunity for economic growth. The piggery units and animal care centers are linked with various government schemes, which have enabled the rural people of the North East to enhance their standard of living.

The youth of rural India is not far behind in contributing to the economy. Various programs have helped the youth in upskilling, which in turn has led them to grow an entrepreneurial mindset.

The Times of India article mentions the following:

“Rural entrepreneurship can address many socio-economic challenges, through easy and secure access to patient capital, employment growth, improved standard of living, reduction of population migration, increase in per capita income, and equitable distribution of economic power. To fructify this vision, the key stakeholders, i.e. the state, the market, and the civil society, would have to collaborate efficiently. A well-defined partnership among the three cohorts can pave the way to improved livelihood opportunities…”
