This year, National Cinema Day is back with a great deal! The Multiplex Association of India (MAI) declared on September 21 that movie theatres across the country will offer a one-day discount on ticket prices on October 13, to celebrate National Cinema Day.

In case you haven’t watched a movie in a while or have been putting it off because of the high ticket prices, there’s a great deal for you. National Cinema Day has returned this year. The Multiplex Association of India has announced October 13 as the special day when you get an incredible opportunity to watch your favorite films for an unbeatable price of just Rs 99 at any partner chain theatre. With over 4,000 theatres participating, including popular chains like PVR Inox, Cinepolis, Movie Time, and City Pride, this event is sure to be a hit. Although the official websites are yet to be updated, the MAI has promised that additional offers on food and beverages will be made available soon.

National Cinema Day started off globally last year and gained recognition for offering heavily discounted movie tickets. This event turned out quite successful worldwide in boosting the theatre collections. following the devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on sales numbers. In India, last year’s event on September 23 saw a record 6.5 million footfalls for shows that began screening as early as 6 a.m., and box office collections were estimated at Rs. 48 crore.

The MAI released a statement expressing that this year’s event celebrates successful films and invites people of all ages to enjoy a day of cinema. It thanked moviegoers and welcomed new visitors to the local cinema.

National Cinema Day, this year, was celebrated in the U.S. and U.K. on August 27 and September 23 respectively. India delayed its Cinema Day celebrations, supposedly due to the Shah Rukh Khan-led Jawan’s grand success. It is presumed that stakeholders wanted to avoid hampering the movie’s box office collections with the low ticket cost.

PVR Inox, India’s largest movie chain, reported a significant increase in revenue in July due to the release of three Hollywood blockbusters – Barbie, Oppenheimer, and Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning-Part 1. Additionally, this year’s Bollywood releases like Pathan, Jawan, and Gadar 2, have also been successful in generating high box office earnings. So it is safe to predict that theaters have been able to overcome the ill effects of the pandemic and the emergence of OTT platforms, which previously led to a decline in the number of moviegoers. In this scenario, the return of National Cinema Day is bound to be a resounding success for the movie theatre business.
