The US state of Florida’s Broward County has declared November as ‘Hindu Heritage Month’ acknowledging Hinduism as one of the world’s largest and oldest religions, and its importance in their society.

In a noteworthy move towards honoring Hinduism as one of the world’s largest and oldest religions, the state of Florida’s Broward County officially proclaimed November as ‘Hindu Heritage Month’.

This declaration serves as a testament to the county’s recognition of the significant contributions that the Hindu faith has made in fields such as arts, food, meditation, Ayurveda, and Yoga, among others. Additionally, the country acknowledges the positive impact that the Hindu religion has had on numerous individuals, intellectuals, and leaders in the United States.

The resolution stated that the American Hindu community has made significant contributions to various sectors including information technology, medicine, science and engineering, hospitality, finance, academia, manufacturing, energy, and retail trade.

It also highlighted the fact that the Hindu philosophy of Vedanta and its concept of “seva” and non-violence have inspired American leaders, from Martin Luther King, Jr, John D. Rockefeller, Henry David Thoreau, to Aldous Huxley, and many others.
Welcoming the move, CoHNA (Coalition of Hindus of North America), a Hindu advocacy group in the US, said on September 12,”The Resolution also acknowledges Hinduism as one of the world’s largest and oldest religions, along with its diverse traditions, collectively known as Sanatana Dharma, with core values of acceptance, mutual respect, freedom, and peace.”
November has been chosen to recognize “Hindu Heritage Month” because it holds great significance for Hindus who celebrate the festival of lights, Diwali, on the 12th of November this year. According to recent estimates, the Indian population in Florida is 153,968, making them the largest Asian group.

This resolution of Broward County almost coincides with the state of Georgia’s recognition of the Hindu American community’s contributions by designating October as “Hindu Heritage Month”.

Other states Texas, Ohio, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Virginia, California, etc, have already commemorated Hindu heritage, culture, values, and traditions.

The foundation of Hinduism, also known as Sanatan Dharma, is rooted in the teachings of Vedanta which emphasize the connection between the individual self or soul and the Supreme God. By practicing service, non-violence, and meditation, one can overcome their ego and unite with the Supreme God. Incorporating these values into one’s life can greatly contribute to their overall personal growth and development. So recognizing these values #s of Hinduism is a significant step and it sets an example for other communities to follow. India, the largest Hindu nation in the world and the birthplace of Vedanta, definitely has reason to celebrate this occasion.
