Following India’s successful lunar mission, the I2U2 nations have announced a joint space mission.
The I2U2 is a grouping of four nations where ‘I’ represents India and Israel, and ‘U’ represents the United States and UAE. The four countries have signed up for cooperation in “water, energy, transportation, space, and food security.”
The representatives of the I2U2 nations announced a new joint space mission, which will assist in creating a “unique space-based tool” for institutions, policymakers, and entrepreneurs.
The announcement by I2U2 group of nations made the announcement on the sidelines of the recently held United Nations General Assembly session held in New York.
In a press release, the US Department of State spokesperson said:
“Under the I2U2 group’s focus area of space, the governments of India, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States, all signatories of the Artemis Accords, announced a new joint space venture on the margins of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.”
Impressed by India’s lunar mission, which saw Chandrayan 3 land on the South Pole of the Moon, the I2U2 nations came together to launch their own space mission.
“Primarily using the space-based observation data and capabilities of the four I2U2 partner countries, this project aims to create a unique space-based tool for policymakers, institutions, and entrepreneurs, enabling their work on environmental and climate change challenges and furthering our cooperation in the applications of space data for the greater good of humanity,” the press release reads.
The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has achieved success in various missions. Be it the recent moon landing or the latest Sun mission, India is one of the leaders in space science at the moment.
The I2U2 grouping comes at a stage when China has made significant inroads in the Middle East. While the I2U2 grouping is seen as a counterweight against the Chinese presence in the Middle East, it is actually doing various progressive works and the latest announcement of the joint space mission is one of them.
An article published in the Print mentions the following:
“Established in 2021, the I2U2 aims to strengthen technological and private sector cooperation in six key areas — water, energy, transportation, space, health, and food security. The forum also serves as a platform to discuss strategic infrastructure projects in the Middle East as a counter to China’s increasing influence in the region.”
