The Croatian Football Federation announced Dalic’s departure on Wednesday, less than a week after Croatia’s 2-1 defeat to Portugal in the Round of 32 of the FIFA World Cup.
“I leave with a fulfilled heart, proud of my contribution to the greatest successes of Croatian football in history, and I wish my successor, the national team and Croatian football many new successes,” Dalic said.
The 58-year-old admitted that he reconsidered his decision following an outpouring of support after Croatia’s World Cup exit but ultimately felt the time was right to step aside.
“I have always said that there is no greater honour than leading my national team. The support in recent days prompted me to reconsider my decision, but I feel this is the right moment to conclude this incredible era,” he said.
The Croatian Football Federation described Dalic’s tenure as an unforgettable journey and paid tribute to the coach for overseeing the most successful period in the country’s football history.
“Head coach, thank you for everything — the victories, the achievements, the qualifying berths, the medals, the unity, the respect and your unwavering commitment to fight for Croatia, both on and off the pitch,” the federation said.
Dalic guided Croatia’s golden generation, led by Luka Modric, to the 2018 FIFA World Cup final in Russia before securing a third-place finish at the 2022 tournament in Qatar. He also led the nation to the final of the 2023 UEFA Nations League.
The Croatian federation has not yet announced Dalic’s successor as preparations begin for the next international cycle.
