The women of Peth village have found economic freedom by producing a variety of pickles and papads.

Peth village situated in Palghar district in Maharashtra is just like any other rural community in India. However, the women of the village have discovered a way to gain financial freedom and stability by turning their culinary skills into smart business propositions.

Formed in December 2022, the Nari Shakti Utpadak Gat began with a modest investment of Rs. 200 a woman. Today, the group has found favorable markets in top-tier cities of the country like Delhi, Mumbai, and Pune. The group has also managed to accumulate Rs. 31,000 in profits.

The pickle and papad factory in the village of Peth is an unused school. The village panchayat helped the women of the village turn the school into a factory. An article published on Village Square mentions the following:

“With the support of the village panchayat, an unused school building in Peth has been transformed into the group’s workplace. The women maintain discipline by arriving at around 11 a.m. to plan and roll out papads, make pickles, and prepare snacks until 4 p.m. Babita, 50, renowned in the village for her cooking skills, describes the experience as both fun and educational.”

In addition to producing four varieties of papad, the nari Shakti Utpadak Gat is known for its special mango pickles, which are made from freshly procured mangos from farms.

The Village Square article mentions:

“The SHG also specializes in making mango pickles with fruits sourced directly from farms, using traditional recipes passed down by grandmothers. Their range comprises five varieties, including the spicy avakkai pickle from southern India made in sesame oil, the classic north Indian mango pickle in mustard oil, and the tangy-sweet varieties. The popular Shonda pickle from Gujarat is made with molasses or sugar, based on customer preferences, while the lasude or gonda pickle is made from green berries. All the pickles contain rock salt.

Besides papads and pickles, the women also make other delicacies such as sesame-jaggery laddoos.”

Women from rural India are assisting in the growth of the economy in various ways. In the next episode, we will explore another success story from rural India.
