Ali Shirazi, a representative of Ayatollah Khamenei, believes that the Shiite group in Yemen, Houthi, and the Shiite group in Lebanon, Hezbollah, are ‘similar.’

The Houthis and Hezbollah have a lot in common; however, there are some fundamental differences. While the history of the two is somewhat similar, they originated in different regions of the Middle East. Ali Shirazi, in an interview published by the Defa Press, said:

“The Houthi group is a similar copy to Lebanon’s Hezbollah, and this group will come into action against enemies of Islam.

The Islamic republic directly supports the Houthis in Yemen, Hezbollah in Lebanon, the popular forces in Syria and Iraq.”

Here are some similarities between the two outfits:

One: Both were born during political upheaval

The fifteen-year civil war in Lebanon was one of the major factors for the emergence of Hezbollah. According to a political agreement, the major religious groups in Lebanon would be given some power. Although the terms and conditions looked good on paper, they soon turned into the primary reason for the civil war in Yemen. The Shiite Muslims were against the political agreement, which led to a section of the religious group forming Hezbollah.

The Houthis were a product of political turmoil caused by Saleh, the ruler of Yemen. Saleh misused his power and was allegedly hoarding national wealth for personal gains. Disturbed by the regime, the Shiite Zaydi community formed a rebel organization and adopted the name Houthi.

Two: Both are supported by the IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps)

The IRGC supported and trained Hezbollah to gain power in Lebanon. Through its support, Hezbollah gained control of Lebanon and was able to establish Shiite rule in the country. The IRGC played a similar role to the Houthi rebel group. Not only did IRGC support the Houthis, but it also provided funds and military training. The Houthi rebels were able to capture Sanaa, the capital of Yemen, and put Saleh in exile.

Are the Houthis the next Hezbollah?

Although Hezbollah was a rebel outfit, it had political ambitions, which turned them into an unbeatable force in Lebanon and Syria. Houthis, on the other hand, are fundamentally a rebel group with questionable governing capabilities. If Houthis are to become the next Hezbollah, they need to adopt political ideologies and prove they have governing capabilities.
