Who is Subhadeep Ghosh, Team India’s new fielding coach

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has appointed former Assam cricketer Subhadeep Ghosh as Team India’s new fielding coach. He is expected to replace T Dilip and join the national team’s coaching staff before the Sri Lanka Test series.

Ghosh’s first assignment with the senior men’s team will be the two-Test series against the Lankan Lions, beginning on August 15.

The change comes after India’s poor fielding during Ireland and England tours. The team dropped catches, made fielding mistakes and missed key chances, which hurt India‘s performances.

Who is Subhadeep Ghosh?

Subhadeep Ghosh is a former domestic cricketer from Assam. Born in Digboi in 1968, Ghosh will take charge as Team India’s new fielding coach.

Also known as Joy, Ghosh was a right-handed middle-order batter and an off-spinner. He represented Assam and Railways in domestic cricket and made his debut during the 1994-95 season.

Ghosh featured in 17 First-Class and 17 List A matches. He scored 316 runs in First-Class cricket and 307 runs in List A cricket before retiring from domestic cricket. His last First-Class match came in 2004, while his List A career ended in 2005.

He then moved into coaching and became part of India’s cricket development system. He has been associated with the National Cricket Academy (NCA) for the last six to seven years, where he worked under former India head coach Rahul Dravid.

He has worked with several Indian teams across different age groups. He has coached the India Under-19 team, India A and the Indian women’s team, serving as the fielding coach during the women’s tour of Australia in 2021. Most recently, he was part of the India A support staff during the Sri Lanka tour.

Ghosh also has experience in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He was part of the Kolkata Knight Riders’ support staff when the team won the IPL title in 2014. He later worked as the fielding coach of Delhi Capitals.
