This Northeastern state is making history through organic farming and inspiring other regions in India to do the same.
Known for its scenic beauty and bountiful harvest, the Northeastern state is known for achieving many things; however, it is now known for its organic farming. The region has now gained the status of being the first organic state in the world.
The Northeastern state that has made organic farming the centerpiece of its agricultural activities is Sikkim.
In addition to cultivating potatoes and maize, the farmers of Sikkim cultivate various types of seasonal vegetables and fruits without the use of synthetic chemicals which is harmful both for the produce and people who consume it.
Located in the bosom of the great Himalayas, Sikkim is the perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of city life. In addition to attracting hundreds of thousands of tourists every year, Sikkim is making organic farming an alternate source of income.
An article published on Village Square talks about the life of Kal Bahadur Gurung. The article mentions the following:
“What makes Gurung’s tale remarkable is not merely his pastoral toil, but the spirit that breathes life into his land — an ethos of organic farming that shuns chemical fertilisers. The 40-year-old farmer embodies the success of Sikkim’s ground-breaking organic farming movement. The result? A thriving business that rakes in approximately Rs 3 lakh annually.
‘The demand for our organic vegetables is high, and even our cows contribute to this sustainable ecosystem by producing organic milk,” Gurung said.’”
One should not read the success of Sikkim following Gurung’s narrative alone. Almost 66,000 farmers in Sikkim are reaping the benefits of organic farming. After being declared the first organic state in the world, the farmers of this Northeastern state have found themselves in the consciousness of other agricultural workers in India. The movement began in 2003 and has continued to the present day, where farmers of Sikkim refrain from using toxic chemicals and agents for cultivation.
The Village Square article mentions:
“The transformational journey commenced two decades ago, when the state government embarked on the mission to transition its entire 76,000 hectares of agricultural land into organic sanctuaries.
“Our focus was to educate farmers about the detrimental effects of chemical fertilisers. Convincing them was not an arduous task, as their pre-existing practices were already minimally reliant on chemicals,” explained S Anbalagan, chief executive officer of Sikkim Organic Farming Development Agency (SOFDA) in the Sikkim agriculture department.”
