Indie pop artist Washed Out’s latest song, “The Hardest Part,” delves into the universal theme of lost love. Interestingly, to capture the essence of longing in the tune, the musician took an unconventional approach by incorporating artificial intelligence.Sora AI technology in music

In a groundbreaking collaboration, Washed Out, also known as Ernest Greene, teamed up with filmmaker Paul Trillo to create a music video using OpenAI’s Sora text-to-video technology. This marks the first time a major music artist and filmmaker have joined forces to utilize this innovative AI technology, as confirmed by Washed Out’s record label, Sub Pop.Sora AI technology in music

The four-minute video swiftly takes viewers on a journey through various stages of a couple’s life. From passionate moments and rebellious acts in a 1980s high school to their wedding and the birth of their child, the audience witnesses the key elements of their relationship. As Greene’s melodic voice croons, “Don’t you cry, it’s all right now. The hardest part is that you can’t go back.”

What’s intriguing is that the couple in the video are not portrayed by real actors but are entirely digitally created using Sora’s AI. This video could potentially pave the way for a groundbreaking trend in video production, where AI plays a significant role.

Greene expressed his excitement about incorporating this cutting-edge technology into his creative process, stating, “I think where we are now—that’s about to explode, and so I look forward to being able to incorporate some of this brand-new technology and seeing how that informs what I can come up with. So, if that’s pioneering, I would love to be part of that.”

“The Hardest Part” serves as the lead single from Greene’s upcoming self-produced album, “Notes From a Quiet Life,” scheduled for release on June 28. Notably, this music video is the longest one created using Sora technology thus far. By generating short clips based on written text prompts, the program allowed Trillo to construct scenes that would have been significantly more costly with real actors, sets, and locations.
