Rural Youth is Turning this Place into Eco-Tourism Paradise
The picturesque setting near Kodar Dam in Chhattisgarh has been converted into an eco-tourism facility by the rural youth of the region.
The world is moving at an accelerated pace today. From Artificial Intelligence to space technology, the world has made unimaginable progress in the last few decades. The IT revolution has also influenced rural youth to devise various ways to create revenue streams. With the rise in the popularity of eco-tourism, the young people of the Adivasi community in Chhattisgarh have transformed the picturesque settings near Kodar Dam into an eco-tourism spot.
The campsite near the Kodar Dam is not only a nature retreat for the city dwellers but also a source of income for the Adivasi youth from the Kuhri village.
Kuhri, a village situated in close proximity to Kodar Dam, is known for its colorful wall art. The Gond Adivasi people who live in Kuhri are farmers. Each family of the Gond tribe owns acres of land which they use for cultivation. However, some young men of the tribe have converted their land for the purpose of attracting tourists, which helps them make a better living than farming.
An article published on Village Square mentions the following:
“The Kodar dam site, known as Eco Camp Kodar, is an ideal weekend getaway, as it is just 70 km from the capital city Raipur.
Nearby there are tourist attractions like the Barnawapara Wildlife Sanctuary and the archaeological heritage site of Sirpur.”
Launched in November last year, the Van Chetna Kendra (forest sensitization center) is a joint initiative of the forest department and the Mahasamund district administration.
The Village Square article reads:
“With 60 to 70 tents, costing a camper Rs 1,600 a night, and around 50 day-trippers coming to take boat rides, the eco site has already pulled in about Rs 14 lakh in six short months.”
Eco Camp Kodar is known for its birds and boats, providing a perfect getaway for the weekends. Furthermore, the archaeological sites at Sirpur and the Barnawapara Wildlife Sanctuary are nearby tourist attractions that can keep the visitors hooked.
Sometimes it takes individuals to come together and change their lives because reliance on government schemes or expecting help from other external sources can turn out to be futile. The young men of the Gond tribe have shown how hard work and perseverance can bear positive results.
