Restoration of Chakia Pond, Gorakhpur – Blue Green Uttar Pradesh

The Gangetic Plains are among the most fertile and densely populated regions in the world, supporting millions of people, agriculture, and biodiversity. This landscape depends on a network of ponds, wetlands, and seasonal water bodies that recharge groundwater, regulate floods, and sustain ecosystems. However, rapid urbanization, industrialization, and infrastructure expansion have led to the degradation of these critical water resources, causing many traditional ponds to disappear.

Chakia Pond, located along the highway between Gorakhpur and Basti, is one such water body that faced severe ecological stress. Increasing population pressure, conversion of agricultural land into industrial zones, and roadside development significantly impacted the pond. Challenges such as dust pollution, garbage dumping, prolonged neglect, and excessive siltation reduced its water-holding capacity and weakened its structural integrity, diminishing its ecological importance.

Recognizing the urgent need for pond restoration in Uttar Pradesh, the Environmental Foundation of India, in partnership with Kotak Mahindra Bank, along with the Gorakhpur Industrial Development Authority and the Government of Uttar Pradesh, undertook the restoration of Chakia Pond under the #BlueGreenUttarPradesh initiative.

This lake and pond restoration project in Gorakhpur aims to revive the pond’s ecological function by improving water retention, reducing siltation, and restoring habitat for local biodiversity. The initiative not only strengthens groundwater recharge and climate resilience but also highlights the importance of conserving small water bodies in rapidly developing regions.
