About CHRIST
CHRIST (Deemed to be University) was born out of the educational vision of St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara, founder of the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI), which administers the university. It has undertaken several path-breaking initiatives in Indian higher education through innovative curricula, academic discipline, holistic education, and the adoption of global higher education practices.
The multidisciplinary university offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs in humanities, social sciences, sciences, commerce, management, engineering, architecture, education, and law to nearly 25,000 students. It has seven campuses, including four in Bangalore (Central, Bannerghatta, Kengeri, and Yeshwanthpur), along with the Delhi NCR and Pune Lavasa off-campuses.
About the School of Law
The School of Law, CHRIST (Deemed to be University), has established itself as one of India’s premier law schools through its five-year law programme. The school combines an advanced curriculum, clinical legal education, and faculty-guided participation in curricular and extracurricular activities.
The programme goes beyond the minimum requirements prescribed by the Bar Council of India and is supported by highly qualified faculty and a well-equipped library with extensive online and offline resources.
About the Gender Studies Committee
The Gender Studies Committee, School of Law, CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Bangalore, aims to create a space for students to critically engage with gender identity, feminism, queer theory, and issues at the intersection of the private and public spheres.
Over the years, the Committee has actively contributed to research, outreach, advocacy, policy framing, legislative review, and collaborations with national and state-level departments, ministries, and commissions. It also promotes academic engagement through reading circles, guest lectures, certificate courses, and open forums.
About the Policy Hackathon
The policy hackathon focuses on developing a comprehensive safe streets protocol that addresses accessibility and safety in public spaces through an intersectional approach.
Participants are expected to draft a policy considering the lived experiences of diverse groups. The proposed protocol may include aspects such as:
- Urban planning and infrastructure
- Public transport safety
- Street lighting
- Surveillance and privacy safeguards
- Emergency response mechanisms
- Community engagement
- Reporting and grievance redressal
- Accountability of public authorities
- Digital safety
- Public awareness initiatives
Participants are encouraged to analyze the existing legal and policy framework, including constitutional principles, municipal regulations, judicial precedents, and national and international best practices, while relying on empirical research, policy reports, case studies, and stakeholder consultations.
Eligibility
- Undergraduate and postgraduate law students.
- The competition will be conducted in person. Only students who are able to travel to the Bangalore Central Campus are encouraged to register.
Registration Details
Registration Fee:
- ₹750 for external participants.
- ₹450 for students of CHRIST (deemed to be a university).
The registration fee is non-refundable.
Competition Format
Stage I
- Each participant will be allotted a stakeholder prior to the competition relating to the planning, implementation, or enforcement of a Safe Streets Protocol, including municipalities, urban planners, police and law enforcement authorities, state authorities, and women’s commissions.
- Participants are required to conduct stakeholder-specific research before the in-person round.
Stage II
- Participants will be grouped into teams of three based on stakeholder allotments.
- Teams will collaboratively draft the policy using the prescribed template.
- Time allotted:
- 1 hour for discussion.
- 2 hours for drafting, compilation, and formatting.
- The best policy drafts will be shortlisted for presentation before a panel of academicians on August 12, 2026.
Submission Guidelines
- Font: Garamond
- Font Size: 12
- Line Spacing: 1.15
- Footnotes: Font Size 10, Line Spacing 1.0
- Margins: 1 inch on all sides
- Minimum word limit: 1,500 words
- References must be provided as footnotes.
- AI-generated content and plagiarism will result in immediate disqualification.
- Citations must follow the Harvard Bluebook (21st Edition).
- Submissions must be made in both .doc/.docx and .pdf formats.
General Guidelines
- The Gender Studies Committee reserves all rights over the submitted policy drafts.
- The decision of the committee and judges shall be final and binding.
- Non-compliance with the rules and guidelines may result in disqualification.
Prizes
- 1st Best Team Draft: ₹9,000
- 2nd Best Team Draft: ₹6,000
- Best Presenter: ₹3,000
The top 10 team submissions will receive Certificates of Merit, and all participants will receive Certificates of Participation. Prize money is subject to applicable GST deductions at source.
