Srinivas (2026) held that courts must undertake a meaningful and holistic reading of the plaint while deciding an application under Order VII Rule 11 CPC and cannot permit cleverly drafted pleadings to conceal a statutory bar. The Court found that the plaintiff’s own averments indicated that the suit properties were purchased in another person’s name using the plaintiff’s funds, thereby attracting the provisions of the Prohibition of Benami Property Transactions Act, 1988. - DRDO Conducts Maiden Test of ICBM-Class Missile: DRDO reportedly conducted the maiden test of a nuclear-capable intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM)-class system off the Odisha coast. - VB-G RAM G Act to Replace MGNREGA: The VB-G RAM G Act, 2025 will come into force across rural India from July 1, 2026, replacing the MGNREGA, 2005. The new law increases the statutory employment guarantee from 100 to 125 days per rural household annually and focuses on sustainable development, durable asset creation, technology-enabled governance, and transparency. - Supreme Court Calls for Bench-Bar Grievance Redressal Committees: The Supreme Court called for the constitution of grievance redressal committees across the country to amicably resolve disputes and concerns between the Bench and the Bar. The direction came while hearing petitions concerning a viral video involving an Andhra Pradesh High Court judge and a young advocate, although the Court noted that the issue had already been resolved between the parties. - Mother Tongue Education Has Constitutional Protection: In Padam Mehta v. State of Rajasthan (2026 INSC 476), the Supreme Court held that meaningful education requires instruction in a language that children can understand, linking mother tongue education with Articles 19(1)(a), 21A, and 350A of the Constitution. - Chargesheet Documents Cannot Be Withheld from Accused Citing Official Secrets Act: In V.K. Singh v. Central Bureau of Investigation & Anr. (2026), the Supreme Court held that an accused cannot be denied access to documents forming part of the chargesheet merely because the case involves the Official Secrets Act. The Court emphasised that supplying relevant documents is essential to ensuring a fair trial under Article 21 and Section 207 CrPC, while also recognising the need to protect national security. - SC Collegium Clears Six Bombay HC Judges for Permanent Appointment: The Supreme Court Collegium has approved the appointment of six Additional Judges of the Bombay High Court, Justices Nivedita Prakash Mehta, Prafulla S. Khubalkar, Ashwin D. Bhobe, Rohit W. Joshi, Advait M. Sethna, and Pravin S. Patil, as Permanent Judges. (May 18, 2026)

The Court observed that unchecked stray dog presence in schools, hospitals, transport hubs, and public roads reflects administrative failure and can infringe citizens’ fundamental rights. - India Prohibits Sugar Exports Until September 2026: The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) prohibited the export of all categories of sugar, including raw, white, and refined sugar, with immediate effect until September 30, 2026. The measure shifts sugar exports from the restricted category to a complete export ban. (May 19, 2026)
- India’s First Private Marine Gas Turbine Facility: Bharat Forge Limited signed an MoU with the Andhra Pradesh Government to establish India’s first private-sector marine gas turbine facility in Visakhapatnam. - Mere Exclusion of Natural Heirs Does Not Invalidate a Will: The Supreme Court, in Parvathi Nairthi (Dead) & Ors. v. Laxmi Nairthy (Dead) through LRs. & Ors. (2026), held that merely excluding a spouse or children from a Will does not make it suspicious or invalid, as the very purpose of a Will is to alter the normal line of succession. The Court upheld a Will that bequeathed property to the testator’s sister, finding that its execution was properly proved through an attesting witness and that allegations of forgery and fabrication remained unsubstantiated. - Vande Mataram Compulsory in West Bengal Madrasas: West Bengal made the singing of “Vande Mataram” compulsory in all State-aided madrasas through an order issued by the Directorate of Madrasa Education. - Justice Is Not a Cloistered Virtue, Judges Need Not Be Treated as Holy Cows: The Madras High Court, in R.S. Tamilvendan v. Secretary to the State of Tamil Nadu & Ors. (2026), refused to ban the Tamil film Karuppu, holding that a fictional portrayal of a corrupt judge does not justify censorship. The Court strongly upheld artistic freedom and freedom of speech, observing that judges are not “holy cows” and that constructive criticism of the judiciary is permissible in a democracy.
