About the Law Commission of India Voluntary Internship Scheme 2026
The Voluntary Internship Scheme of the Law Commission of India is aimed at providing undergraduate and postgraduate law students, as well as law scholars, with an opportunity to gain practical experience and a deeper understanding of the Commission’s research-oriented work in the fields of legal reform, law and policy development, and legal system modernisation.
It allows selected candidates to engage directly with the work of drafting, analysis, and review processes that shape Indian legal policy.
Eligibility
- Law students pursuing the 2nd and 3rd year of a three-year LL.B. programme, or the 2nd to 5th year of a five-year integrated law degree course, from any recognised college/law school/university
- LL.B., LL.M., and research students
- A candidate shall be entitled to apply for internship under this Scheme only once during a financial year
Mode of Internship
Interns shall ordinarily work at the Law Commission’s office. However, depending upon circumstances and the nature of work, hybrid/remote working options may be considered at the discretion of the competent authority.
Duration
The internship under this Scheme shall ordinarily be for a duration of four weeks, which may be extended on the intern’s request for a maximum period of eight weeks, subject to the recommendation of the supervising officer and approval of the Chairperson.
Application Requirements
While making the application, a candidate shall submit:
- Updated CV
- Scanned copy of the ID card issued by their institution
- Scanned copy of the signed and stamped recommendation letter from a professor or dean of their institution
- Scanned copy of the latest or last marksheet received from their institution
Selection Process
- Selection will be made by a screening committee
- Based on:
- Academic performance
- Quality of Statement of Purpose
- Availability of slots
- Maximum number of slots under the Scheme will not ordinarily exceed twelve at any time
- The Chairperson may alter the number of slots as deemed fit
Reporting of Selected Candidates
Selected candidates will be notified via email and must report to the Law Commission’s Office on the date and time specified along with:
- Valid ID proof
- Passport-size photograph
- Original recommendation letter from a professor or dean
- Original latest or last marksheet
Place of Work
- Interns shall ordinarily work at the Law Commission of India Office
- Hybrid/remote work may be permitted at the discretion of the competent authority depending on circumstances and nature of work
Nature of Work
Interns may be required to:
- Conduct legal research and analysis on existing and proposed legislations and judicial decisions
- Research Law Commission reports in light of contemporary requirements
- Assist in drafting research papers, consultation reports, and working documents
- Participate in seminars and discussions organised or joined by the Commission
- Compile case laws, statutes, comparative legal materials, and literature reviews
- Assist Chairperson, Members, and Research Officers in ongoing work and studies
- Perform any other assigned academic or research-related work
- Submit a short research paper or digitised presentation at the end of the internship
Attendance Requirement
- Minimum 75% attendance is mandatory
- Less than 75% attendance will result in:
- No extension of internship
- No certificate issuance
Conduct & Confidentiality
- Strict confidentiality must be maintained regarding all materials and information
- Any publication or external communication requires prior written approval
- Discipline and decorum of the office must be maintained
- Violation of rules may lead to:
- Immediate termination
- Adverse remarks to institution
- Any other action deemed fit by the competent authority
Logistics & Support
- This is an unpaid internship
- No remuneration or expenses are provided
- Interns must bear all costs (travel, accommodation, etc.)
- Interns must carry their own laptops and essential stationery
- Facilities provided (subject to availability):
- Library access
- Legal databases
- Internet facility
- Workspace and related resources
Certification
- Certificate will be issued after completion of internship
- Based on evaluation of:
- Research paper / digitised presentation
- Overall work performance

Perk
Certification: A certificate will be issued to the intern at the end of the internship after evaluation by the competent authority of the research paper or digitised presentation and/or assessment of the work done.
