Once known for its cool climate and nestled at the foothills of the Western Ghats, Coimbatore was a landscape of flowing streams, thriving lakes, and rich forest cover, a city that once felt like a natural haven. Today, Coimbatore is rapidly transforming into one of Tamil Nadu’s major industrial and IT hubs. With expanding infrastructure, educational institutions, and urban growth, vast stretches of farmland and grasslands have given way to dense residential complexes. These developments, while necessary, have begun to trap heat and alter the city’s natural balance.
In the race for development, we have gradually lost vital environmental buffers that once kept the city cool and resilient. The impact of the urban heat island effect is now becoming increasingly evident. What were once cool and comfortable nights—even during peak summers—have turned warm and restless. Days feel harsher, with rising temperatures that longtime residents say were never this intense before. EFI, in collaboration with Firstsource as the funding partner and the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation as the administrative partner, has taken on the responsibility of restoring the city’s green cover.
