Women farmers in Jharkhand have found a way to break the cycle of labor migration through organic farming. In this episode, we will explore how organic farming is changing the lives of farmers in Jharkhand.
India saw a huge number of laborers migrating during the pandemic and between lockdowns. The women of Jharkhand were able to break the cycle of migration through organic farming.
In 2020, India saw an unprecedented lockdown that almost broke the backbone of the country. Among many problems, the country faced, labor migration was one of them. Millions of migrant workers were left without food and shelter and had to travel back to their homes. After the first wave, the migrant laborers made their way back to the cities, only to return after the second lockdown was declared.
The pandemic taught the migrant laborers the economic uncertainty of working in the big cities. Among the migrant workers who traveled to and fro from the cities were the farmers of Jharkhand. Some women of the region found a way to break the toxic cycle of migration through organic farming.
What led to the women of Jharkhand investing their time and resources in organic farming?
A survey conducted by Pradan Sansthan found that chemical fertilizers were reducing the fertility of soil and harming organisms that assist farmers in cultivating fields.
An article published on Village Square mentions the following:
“In response, Pradan initiated its CLAP (Comprehensive Lively Adaptation Pathway) programme as part of which farmers were taught how to grow multiple crops on less land, significantly reducing water usage. They also learned techniques to make organic manure and insecticides from cow dung, neem and cow urine. These homemade solutions are cost-effective and environmentally friendly, and preserve essential soil organisms.”
The women farmers in Jharkhand were encouraged to pursue organic farming to gain financial freedom for their families.
The Village Square article mentions the following:
“…the increased interest in organic farming and the associated benefits are rewarding for those involved in the movement, offering both economic viability and an opportunity to coexist harmoniously with nature. Organic farming proves particularly appealing to farmers with smaller plots of land, as the added value of organic crops enables them to generate significant income.”
Today, the women farmers of Jharkhand are financially free and can support their families in times of need.
