As per a US magazine, India is emerging as a ‘major player’ in the Middle East. In this episode, we will explore how India’s business community is adding to the growing ties with Middle Eastern countries.

From Prime Minister Modi’s visit to various corporate houses investing in Gulf Nations, India is truly emerging as a major player in the Middle East.

Ten years ago, New Delhi was not very keen on taking economic or diplomatic relations to the next level, as far as the Middle East was concerned. However, things have rapidly developed since then.

Steven A Cook, in his article in Foreign Policy, a popular US magazine, has highlighted the changing geopolitical landscape in the Middle East. Cook mentions that India has made rapid inroads in the Middle East in terms of economic and diplomatic developments. Cook, in his write-up mentions, the following:

“While US officials and analysts are obsessed with every diplomatic move Beijing makes and eye Chinese investment in the Middle East with suspicion, Washington is overlooking one of the most interesting geopolitical developments in the region in years: the emergence of India as a major player in the Middle East.”

While it is true that India shied away from making big economic deals and investments in the past, it has now taken several leaps forward. In 2022, the Adani Group, along with an Israeli partner, made history by winning a tender for Haifa Port for $ 1.2 billion. The two countries are also negotiating on India-Israel free trade.

Cook, in his article, mentions:

“Of course, the India-Israel relationship is complicated. India remains steadfast in its support for the Palestinians; has friendly ties with Iran, from which New Delhi has purchased significant amounts of oil; and Indian elites tend to see Israel through the prism of their country’s own colonial experience”

India’s recent visit to Egypt also shows India’s keenness to further the geopolitical ties with the ancient nation of Pharaohs. New Delhi has realized that if it wants to strengthen economic ties with Africa and Europe, Egypt must become its strong ally.

India’s emergence as a major player in the Middle East goes to show how the country is becoming a power hub of international politics.
