Internship Experience @ Lawctopus Law School (Virtual)

Lawctopus Law School (Summer Training Program – Online)

June 1, 2025 to June 30, 2025

I applied through my college, Kingston Law College, after my professor shared the workshop and internship details with our class.

The internship began with a very structured onboarding process. I received a detailed ‘Internship Manual’ that explained the deadlines and how to submit my work. The infrastructure was entirely online, using a professional dashboard where all my tasks were listed.

My first impression was that it felt very organized and serious—it wasn’t just a ‘reading’ internship; it felt like I was being trained as a real junior associate at a law firm.

During my internship, I focused on the practical application of corporate law through drafting and research. My key responsibilities included:

  • Contract Redrafting: I worked on revising a ‘Deed of Sale,’ where I had to modify clauses to protect the interests of both the vendor and purchaser, specifically focusing on consideration and advance payment terms.
  • Drafting Corporate Documents: I drafted a ‘Memorandum of Association’ (MoA) for a private limited company, including the Objects Clause, Liability Clause, and Subscription Clause. I also performed critical thinking tasks to distinguish which clauses belong in the MoA versus the Articles of Association (AoA).
  • Specialized Research: I completed a Capstone Project on Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) in collaboration with C Cube Advisors LLP, where I analyzed the legal and strategic aspects of corporate restructuring.
  • Legal Writing: I practiced professional legal research and writing, producing an abstract and analysis on ‘Protection of Child Rights and Judicial Activism,’ ensuring all work followed proper legal formatting and citation standards.

The environment was professional and feedback-driven. Even though it was remote, there was a sense of community.

The mentors provided feedback on our drafts, which helped me understand where I was making mistakes in my legal language. The deadlines were strict, which taught me how to manage my time efficiently, a skill that is crucial for any corporate lawyer.

The best part was the focus on drafting. In college, we learn the theory, but here I actually learned how to write a contract that a company would use.

Because it was virtual, I missed the chance to see a physical office or interact with colleagues face-to-face. Sometimes, the workload was heavy along with my college studies.

Since this was a virtual internship, I did not have to travel to a physical office. I worked from my hostel in Kolkata. This was very convenient as it saved me time on commuting and allowed me to manage my college classes alongside the internship tasks.

I used my personal mobile and a stable internet connection to complete all my assignments.

Being my first internship, I was worried I wouldn’t understand anything. However, the structured nature of the Lawctopus program made it easy to transition from college life to professional legal work. The biggest lesson I learned is that details matter.

In corporate law, one wrong comma or a missing word in a contract can change everything. I also learned the importance of time management, balancing college lectures in the morning and internship assignments in the evening was tough, but it taught me how to be more disciplined.

My advice to juniors is don’t be intimidated by the ‘Corporate’ label. Start with the basics of drafting and don’t be afraid to make mistakes on your first few assignments. The feedback you get is where the real learning happens!

After spending hours drafting contracts and researching the Companies Act, I made sure to step away from my mobile to keep my mind fresh. Sometimes, I’d just listen to some music or watch a movie to completely disconnect from the ‘corporate’ mindset before starting fresh the next morning.
