While the US is monitoring every move China makes in the Middle East, India is cementing and enhancing its position in the region.

Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, Iran’s Foreign Minister, recently concluded his visits to the Gulf Nations. The foreign minister visited the capitals of Oman, UAE, and Kuwait. If the visits prove successful, it will be a secondary victory for China.

While it is true that China is looking to enhance its relations in the Middle East, the US is monitoring its every move. For both China and the USA, the Middle East holds immense geopolitical significance. While both countries are transactional power, for China, it is mainly economical.

The equation for India is rather different. India wants to establish a “multipolar” world where every country can share mutually beneficial relations with each other. However, with the involvement of an aggressive China, establishing a healthy relationship is becoming difficult for both China and India. Then again, there is another side to the Indian story: the US is monitoring every move China is making in the Middle East, leaving room for India to develop and enhance its ties with the Middle Easter countries.

For the US, having India grow its relations with the Middle Eastern countries is better than Chinese involvement in the region. While it is true that India is facing challenges from China, it is not something Indian leaders can’t work around.

An article published on Middle East Institute mentions the following:

“The difference in strategies being employed by India and its partners in the Middle East, including Israel, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Iran, poses a challenge regarding how best to cement India’s own national interests with these countries as they engage more with Beijing on issues like foreign policy, security, technology, and defense…”

“…China’s role in brokering a deal between Saudi Arabia and Iran to restore diplomatic relations after seven years has raised additional questions about what impact a potentially strong Iran backed by Chinese investments via the long-term strategic partnership between Tehran and Beijing might have on both the Arab powers and Israel alike…,”the article further states.”

While China is making inroads in the Middle East, India, and the US are beginning to challenge Beijing. The formation of I2U2 is a new minilateral framework through which the democracies of the world are challenging Chinese inroads in the Middle East. The I2U2 grouping comprises India, Israel, the US, and the UAE.

In the next episode, we will take a look at the development of the I2U2 and India’s growth as a major player in the region.
