How India Shocking the World by Making Inroads into the Middle East
The US has found a reliable Asian partner in the form of India. While Washington is leveraging New Delhi’s presence in the Middle East to counterweight Beijing, India is still working as an independent country with national interest at heart in the region.
China’s role as a mediator between Saudi Arabia and Iran is one of the most significant events of recent times. Beijing’s role as the mediator has drawn significant attention from its competitor in the region, the US. With the focus on these superpowers, India has quietly gone on to emerge as a significant player in the region.
An article published in New Arab mentions the following:
“In a meeting held in Riyadh on 7 May, US national security advisor Jake Sullivan, his Emirati and Indian counterparts, and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman discussed a large-scale connectivity project. This ambitious initiative aims to establish road, railroad, and seaport links, fostering stronger economic links between the Middle East and India.”
The project is a direct result of meetings held by the I2U2 nations. The I2U2 is a group of four countries that focuses on trade and economic growth as opposed to political matters. The group comprising India, Israel, the US, and the UAE is currently working on several projects.
According to the White House, the infrastructure project will help to “advance their shared vision of a more secure and prosperous Middle East region interconnected with India and the world.”
India’s involvement in the I2U2 is also being seen as a strategic move to counterweight the Chinese presence in the region.
The New Arab article reads:
“Despite talk of the US’ declining influence in the Middle East, Washington is currently striving to merge its Indo-Pacific strategy, which involves curbing China’s expansion in that region, with its engagement in the Middle East. It hopes to achieve this by leveraging ties with Delhi, showing a growing interconnectedness between these two geopolitical hotspots.”
Furthermore, the normalization of Israel and UAE through the 2020 Abraham Accords is also one of the major reasons for the success of the I2U2.
“Building upon initiatives like the 2020 Abraham Accords, where Israel and the UAE normalized relations, the United States sees this potential Indo-Abrahamic alliance as an opportunity “to do more with less” in the region, added Soliman. Moreover, the Abraham Accords have been advantageous to India, as they have facilitated a framework for Delhi to operate regionally,” the article further reads.
