This is What India Must Do to produce World-Class Athletes
While several initiatives have been taken by the government to improve the standards of athletes, there is still room for growth. The private sector can join or collaborate with government agencies to create world-class infrastructure for our players.
For decades, Indian athletes have suffered due to poor infrastructure. While some sports like Cricket get all the attention, some go completely unnoticed. However, things have been rapidly changing for the last ten years. Several government initiatives such as Target Olympic Podium, and Fit India, among others, have yielded fantastic results for India. India has won several awards in the last decade due to various initiatives taken by the government to enhance the performance of the players.
India is blessed with talent, which is why winning medals is not a challenge; however. Poor infrastructure led to the downfall of players in the last few decades.
An article published in the Economic Times mentions the following:
“There is no dearth of sporting talent. So, winning medals will be a default consequence if we relentlessly work towards changing the mindset, building infrastructure, and ensuring accessibility. As key stakeholders, governments have the job of writing policies and guiding sports bodies on how to design visionary strategies. But neither side can utilize a nation’s true sporting potential without the support of the private sector.”
While there is no dearth of sporting talents in India, the private sector has to pitch in actively to promote and encourage young talent. The private sector has to begin at the grassroots level and assist the youngsters in learning the basics of any sport.
Participating in sports from an early age will groom youngsters to face international championships.
The Economic Times article reads:
“Apart from acting as a talent pool, these programs work towards instilling values that can be learned by playing a particular sport. At the school level itself, more tournaments would lead to exposure and help us scout for talent at a young age.”
Infrastructure is not only about world-class stadiums: it is about strong and capable trainers, academia, nutrition, sports science, equipment, mental counseling, and conditioning among other resources.
The ET article reads:
“In essence, we need to work towards creating and enabling the sports ecosystem and we need the private sector to become a key change-maker. This is not a new idea but with the change taking place slowly and gradually, this is the right time to capitalize on it.”
