India aims to cover E20 fuel pan India by 2025

During the recent G20 meeting, PM Modi announced India’s commitment to prioritizing humanitarian considerations in all development efforts. This places a responsibility on India to lead by example and demonstrate its commitment to this mission. One way in which this will be achieved is by introducing a 20% ethanol blend to fuel, which will reduce carbon emissions and minimize harm. This forward-looking initiative will contribute to a better future for all.

India’s target to roll out 20% ethanol-blended petrol pan- India by 2025. Earlier this year, Piyush Goyal said, the target of E20 fuel by 2025 is, “ambitious and bold” and that the target is achievable if the stakeholders comprehensively work together towards the goal.

The roadmap for E20 fuel in India by 2025 also sets the mark to increase ethanol production domestically, in line with the National Policy on Biofuels 2018. Along with the fuel, manufacturing E20-compliant vehicles also becomes necessary. It is therefore necessary to introduce E10 engine-tuned vehicles from 2025, expand renewable resources such as maize that can be converted into ethanol, and promote technology to convert inedible feedstocks to ethanol.

By June last year, India had already achieved the target of 10% ethanol blend petrol and it was already available at 1,350 fuel stations, far ahead of the target date of November 2022. The ministers during the G20 summit in the Global Biofuel Alliance announced, in cooperation with the US and Brazil, that India would initiate the E20 fuel and would be open to other G20 countries as well.

India is on the right track towards achieving its target of obtaining E20 petrol by 2025, according to the government. The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi launched the sale of E20 petrol in February this year and in a matter of five months, the number of fuel outlets jumped to 1,350 across the country. There are almost 87,000 fuel stations across India. It is imperative that stakeholders and the government work together to achieve such a large target.

Besides, the E20 fuel, the production of affordable E20 complaint vehicles also needs to be considered simultaneously. In the current market, EVs and hybrids are expensive and unsubsidized. Hence, the government also needs to take into consideration on implementing schemes to subsidize the upgradation of vehicles so that it is not heavy on the pockets of the common people.
