The previous record stood at 172 goals, set during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Earlier editions in Brazil 2014 and Russia 2018 produced 171 and 169 goals respectively. The 2026 tournament surpassed those totals comfortably before the knockout rounds reached their conclusion, eventually becoming the first World Cup to cross the 300-goal mark.
The expanded format has played a significant role in the achievement. FIFA increased the number of participating nations from 32 to 48, creating a larger tournament with 40 additional matches compared with previous editions. While direct comparisons with previous World Cups are complicated by the larger format, the 2026 edition’s place in the record books is secure. No previous FIFA World Cup had ever reached the 300-goal threshold.
