Fresh predictions generated by ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini and Anthropic’s Claude after the quarter-final line-up was confirmed point to France, Spain, England and Argentina as the semi-finalists. While Gemini predicts Argentina will successfully defend their World Cup title, ChatGPT and Claude back Spain to emerge as champions.
All three AI models also predict identical quarter-final results. They expect France to beat Morocco, Spain to overcome Belgium, England to defeat Norway and Argentina to progress past Switzerland, setting up semi-final clashes between France and Spain, and Argentina and England.
The three models unanimously forecast Spain to eliminate France in the first semi-final. Gemini expects the contest to be decided on penalties, while ChatGPT and Claude also back Spain to reach the final.
They also agree that Argentina will defeat England in the second semi-final, sending the defending champions into a title clash against Spain.
The only point of disagreement comes in the final. Gemini predicts Argentina will beat Spain 2-1 after extra time to retain the World Cup, while ChatGPT and Claude forecast a 2-1 victory for Spain, handing the European side its second FIFA World Cup title.
Notably, the projected semi-finalists remain unchanged from the models’ forecasts made before the tournament began. Despite the results of the group stage and knockout rounds so far, all three AI systems continue to back the same four teams to reach the last four.
Each AI model used a different methodology to arrive at its predictions. Gemini relied on Elo ratings, expected goals, defensive metrics and large-scale match simulations. ChatGPT evaluated team performances, squad quality, tactical match-ups, tournament experience and consistency in knockout football. Claude based its forecasts on FIFA rankings while adjusting for recent momentum, player fatigue and tactical factors.
The predictions will now be tested as the quarter-finals get underway, with all three AI models forecasting an identical path to the final but offering different answers to the tournament’s biggest question: whether Argentina can retain the trophy or Spain will reclaim football’s biggest prize.
