About the Organiser
The Government of Tamil Nadu established the Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University (TNDALU) under Act No. 43 of 1997 to advance legal education. Named after Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, it is recognized by the Bar Council of India and the UGC.
As South Asia’s first affiliating law university, TNDALU affiliates government and private law colleges and conducts its own academic programs through the School of Excellence in Law (SOEL), established in 2002.
SOEL offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral legal education focused on experiential learning, critical thinking, and professional competence.
About the Competition
The Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) Competition is a simulation-based academic event replicating real criminal investigations. Participants work in teams of two to examine a simulated crime scene, document evidence, and use criminal law, evidence law, forensic principles, and logical reasoning to identify the probable perpetrator.
The competition develops critical thinking, teamwork, and professional skills essential for future legal practitioners and investigators.
The associated CSI Workshop provides practical, hands-on guidance by experienced forensic experts to prepare participants in crime scene investigative principles and procedures. It is open to all disciplines without stream restrictions. Workshop-only participants can register separately.
CSI is inherently interdisciplinary in nature. It integrates:
- Criminal Law
- Law of Evidence
- Forensic Science principles
- Logical and analytical reasoning
- Observational and documentation skills
Participants are assessed not merely on identifying a suspect, but on the clarity of their reasoning, evidentiary correlation, structured reporting, and the strength of their conclusions.
Eligibility
- Competition is open to full-time students and full-time research scholars below 30 years from Law, Criminology, Social Work, Human Rights, and Police Administration streams.
- Forensic Science students are not allowed to participate in the competition.
- Academicians from any field may register for the workshop alone.
- Each team must have two members from the same institution; cross-institutional teams are not permitted.
- Multiple teams from the same institution are allowed, except SOEL, which has a reservation of 20 teams.
Competition Structure
- Teams examine a simulated crime scene and apply legal and forensic reasoning.
- Evaluation based on clarity of reasoning, evidentiary correlation, reporting structure, and conclusions.
Team Composition
- Two members per team from the same institution.
- No cross-institutional teams allowed.
- Changes to team composition after registration require approval.
- Maximum 70 teams accepted on a first-come, first-served basis; 20 reserved for the host institution.

Prizes
- Winner: ₹12,000 + Trophy + Certificate of Merit
- Runner-Up: ₹7,000 + Trophy + Certificate of Merit
- 2nd Runner-Up: ₹5,000 + Trophy + Certificate of Merit
- Best Report: ₹4,000 + Trophy + Certificate of Merit
- Best Investigator: ₹4,000 + Trophy + Certificate of Merit
- All participants receive Certificates of Participation.
Registration Fees
- Registration Fee for the Competition is Rs. 3,000/- (inclusive of 18% GST) (Rupees Three Thousand Only) per team, exclusive of accommodation.
- The Registration Fee for SOEL students Rs. 2,500/- (inclusive of 18% GST) (Rupees Two Thousand five Hundred Only) per team,
- The Registration Fee for those participants to attend workshop alone is Rs. 1500/- (inclusive of 18% GST) (Rupees Thousand Five Hundred Only)
Registration Procedure
- Participants are required to complete their Registration via the google form given at the end of the post.
- Upon successful registration and verification, the registered teams will receive a confirmation email containing from the organising committee containing
- The assigned Team Code (for participants of the Competition)
- The assigned Participant code (for participants taking part in workshop alone)
- All further instructions regarding the competition and the workshop
Participants who have registered for the workshop alone shall attend the event only on the first day. They shall not be permitted to attend the competition. Attending the valedictory is compulsory for all participants of workshop and competition.
