India is currently the biggest importer of crude oil, yet it is also one of the countries facing a significant challenge with carbon emissions. Despite various policy changes, the carbon footprint has not declined. Therefore, there is a need to identify potential solutions that not only offer a better alternative but also have the potential to make India a leader in the production of futuristic fuels.
Minister of Road Transport and Highway Minister Shri Nitin Gadkari referred to green hydrogen as the “futuristic fuel”, addressed at a public meeting in Madhya Pradesh. He also added that the state will be producing the highest amount of hydrogen fuel in the future. The Government of India has envisioned making India the epicenter for producing green energy.
Furthermore, Gadkari addressed the farmers, expressing that they will no longer solely be “annadatas” (providers of food) but also “urjadatas” (providers of energy). He suggested that the Rs. 16 lakh crores currently spent on fuel imports could be redirected towards improving the lives of farmers.
Gautam Adani, an industrialist, has partnered with a Japanese company to promote the use of eco-friendly ammonia and hydrogen fuel. The project requires a significant amount of investment of several billion dollars to establish production plants and make these products accessible to consumers. To achieve the “Green Hydrogen Mission,” other major investors and the public-private partnership model must be implemented. The National Green Hydrogen Mission has a projected budget of Rs. 19,744 crores until 2030.
The projection of net zero emissions by 2050 will mark a huge economic change in the country. It will not just provide new job opportunities but also make the country one of the major producers of green hydrogen. India, having a significantly large agricultural sector, has the potential to produce a substantial amount of greenhouse gasses.
Since India has the potential to produce significant amounts of green energy by utilizing agricultural and animal waste, this process could help reduce air pollution, which is a major issue that India needs to address. Every year, air pollution causes numerous health problems for people. Therefore, taking such steps could be a revolutionary solution for controlling air quality.
During the G20 Summit in New Delhi, various countries have pledged to support India’s Prime Minister in adopting a more human-centric approach towards making the Earth a more habitable place for future generations.
