Brazil to Share Technology with India to Blend E20 Petrol

In the world of renewable energy, Brazil stands as the largest producer of ethanol, a biofuel made from sugarcane. The country has recently agreed to share its extensive knowledge and technology with India to help them produce a 20 percent blend of ethanol in petrol by 2025-26.

“Brazil has a flex technology. They do ethanol blending. That technology is good for India also. Brazil has argued that India can use its surplus sugar for ethanol production and through that India can deal with its fuel issue also and that surplus sugar would not enter into the global markets and not impact world prices,” said the official.

On the other hand, India has already made progress in this field by launching e10 and successfully blending e20 in their petrol. This partnership will not only boost the usage of renewable energy but also help both countries reduce their carbon footprint and promote sustainable development.

Brazil and India are two of the world’s largest sugar exporters, with Brazil leading the way at approximately $11 billion in 2022, followed by India at around $5.7 billion. In the highly competitive global sugar market, both nations have been accused of providing domestic support to their farmers, giving them an unfair advantage and allowing them to undercut each other’s prices. This has led to ongoing challenges and disputes between the two countries in their efforts to gain a more significant share of the lucrative sugar market.

During the 2022-23 sugar season, which concluded on September 30, the total sugar production was 373 lakh metric tonnes. Out of which, approximately 11% or 43 lakh metric tonnes were diverted towards ethanol production. The government is discussing the proposal from Brazil with the industry pertaining to this matter.

The country aims to increase the blend from 12% to 20% by the end of the fiscal year 2025-2026. Additionally, the Indian government is experimenting with blending diesel with ethanol, which could provide an alternative fuel source for diesel-run vehicles. As the blending of ethanol with petrol and diesel increases, global automakers will likely introduce flex-fuel engine vehicles in the Indian market. These vehicles can run on gasoline or ethanol, making them a more versatile option for consumers. Flex-fuel vehicles have already gained significant popularity in Brazil, accounting for 83% of new light vehicle sales in 2022.

Ethanol, being a renewable biofuel made from plant materials, is gaining momentum in India as the government seeks to reduce the country’s dependence on petroleum crude oil imports and promote decarbonization of the transport sector. Additionally, the Indian government is incentivizing ethanol production to bolster farmers’ income and promote sustainable agriculture practices. Ethanol is not only a more eco-friendly alternative to fossil fuels but also offers tremendous potential to create jobs, improve rural livelihoods, and support the growth of the Indian economy.
