    About BPSC

    The Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) was established on 1 April 1949 under the Constitution of India to conduct recruitment for civil services and other government posts in Bihar. It operates from its headquarters in Patna and functions under Article 315 of the Constitution. The commission advises the state government on recruitment, promotions, transfers, disciplinary matters, and other service-related issues

    Eligibility Criteria

    • Educational Qualification: Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree from a university/institution recognized by the Bar Council of India. Candidates must produce a certificate from their college/university confirming BCI recognition during their study session.
    • Experience: Minimum 3 years of practice at the Bar as of the advertisement date (23.02.2026). Practice certificates must be authenticated by the District Judge/Principal Judicial Officer or by an advocate with at least 10 years’ experience authorized by the court. Work as a law clerk with a judge/judicial officer will also count towards experience.
    • Age Limit (as on 01.08.2025):
      • Minimum: 22 years
      • Maximum: 35 years (General category)
      • Relaxation: Up to 40 years for reserved categories, women, and OH candidates.
      • Retirement age for Civil Judges: 60 years.

    Selection Process

    Preliminary Examination

    • Paper I – General Studies: 100 questions, 1.5 hours, 100 marks
    • Paper II – Law: 150 questions, 2 hours, 150 marks
    • Objective type (MCQs) with OMR sheets.
    • Minimum qualifying marks: 45% (UR), 40% (Reserved categories).

    Main (Written) Examination

    Compulsory Papers:

    • General Hindi – 100 marks (qualifying, minimum 30 marks required)
    • General English – 100 marks (qualifying, minimum 30 marks required)
    • General Knowledge (including current affairs) – 150 marks
    • Elementary General Science – 100 marks
    • Law of Evidence & Procedure – 150 marks

    Optional Papers (choose any 3 out of 5):

    • Constitutional & Administrative Law of India – 150 marks
    • Hindu Law & Muhammadan Law – 150 marks
    • Law of Transfer of Property, Equity, Trusts & Specific Relief – 150 marks
    • Law of Contracts & Torts – 150 marks
    • Commercial Law – 150 marks

    Note: Revised syllabus includes the Indian Evidence Act, 2023, Civil Procedure Code, Arbitration & Conciliation Act, 1996, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, Provincial Small Cause Courts Act, 1887, and Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.

    Interview

    • 100 marks
    • Minimum qualifying marks: 35%
    • Final merit list based on written exam + interview scores.

    Reservation Rules

    • Benefits only for candidates who claim reservation in the application form and submit valid certificates.
    • Applicable only to residents of Bihar.
    • SC/ST candidates must submit caste and domicile certificates.
    • BC/EBC candidates must submit non-creamy layer certificates.
    • Married women must submit certificates in their father’s name and address, not husband’s.
    • 10% reservation for EWS candidates (only Bihar residents) with valid income & asset certificates.

    Key Points

    • Vacancies may increase or decrease based on government requisition.
    • Candidates must be physically fit; defective colour vision will not disqualify.
    • Civil Judges leaving service before 3 years must give 3 months’ notice or pay equivalent salary.
    • Maximum of 5 attempts allowed for General category candidates (with relaxations for reserved categories).
