New Parliament Will Mark New Beginning
India has marked a new beginning with the commencement of the auspicious Ganesh Chaturthi by bidding farewell to the old British-era parliament house and entering the adjacent new facility on what Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated as a “Today India has awakened with a new consciousness.”
The new session in the new house started with a series of events where the legislative members of the parliament moved to the new house on foot as PM Modi suggested, “Today we are taking leave from here and heading to the new parliament building.” Adding on, he also renamed the old building the “Samvidhan Sadan,” It was a fitting tribute to all the members who had once been a part of the constitution. Hence, the name would always inspire and honor the vital work within its walls.
PM Modi on Monday paid tribute to the old building. As the sources say, the old building will not be demolished and conserved as an archaeological asset, and some parts of the building are to be converted to a museum and provide space for government events in the future.
Before the commencement of the session, the members received a special hamper, which included a copy of the Indian constitution, a postage stamp, and a commemorative coin featuring the new parliament house. The onset of the session marked the introduction of a 27-year-old women’s reservation bill to provide one-third reservation in the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies for women members. PM Modi also appealed to the members to pass the Bill through consensus, as all attempts from the last 27 years have gone in vain, and said that God had chosen him for this “noble work.”
The Women’s Reservation Bill has been named “The Narishakti Vandan Adhiniyam,” which will strengthen democracy and ensure women’s rights. Actor Kangana Ranaut, a special invitee at the new Parliament, said to the media, “This is a wonderful idea; this is all because of our honorable PM Modi and this government and his (PM)’s thoughtfulness towards the upliftment of women.” She also added, “The first session of the new Parliament has been dedicated to women empowerment…This is fantastic…”
Actor Esha Gupta also witnessed the historical event as a guest and said to the reporters in support of the bill, “It’s a beautiful thing that PM Modi has taken this step during the first session in the new Parliament. It’s a progressive thought”.
The Women’s Reservation Bill is among the eight Bills scheduled for discussion in this session. Therefore, it is interesting to see the upcoming Bills included in the agenda. The Bills to be discussed are related to Schedule Caste and Schedule Tribes, Senior citizen’s welfare, and others.
