Bollywood Music: Which is Better, the 50s, 60s or the Ones Trending? Part Four

Film songs are a part and parcel of everyday life in India; however, it has completely changed in recent years.

In the last three episodes, we explored the immortal Bollywood Music created in the 50s, 60s, and 70s. In this episode, we will explore today’s trending music and how it stands when compared to the tunes created in the yesteryears.

The Hindi film industry has come a long way. Latest technologies and software have made life easier for music composers and singers alike. Gone are the days when the entire orchestra had to rerecord due to a wrong note played by a musician or sung by the artist. Software like Cubase and Pro Tools can easily correct pitch and the wrong notes sung or played by an artist. But how about the songs? Are they able to recreate the magic of the bygone era?

Sure there are amazing music directors like Pritam and Amit Trivedi and fantastic vocalists like Sunidhi Chauhan, Sonu Nigam, and Arijit Singh, but when it comes to repeating the magic of the bygone era, the film industry seems to lack somewhere. Music gurus have tried to figure out why this is happening. Well, there are several reasons.

When I sat and evaluated the situation, I realized that it was not so much the music but people’s attention span. There are amazing Music Directors and Singers and they are producing equally good music when compared to the bygone era; however, with people’s attention spans decreasing every moment, it is difficult for one song to remain in public consciousness for long. Music composers and singers realize this trend, which is why they are more interested in creating content that can be consumed fast.

There is yet another fact that must be addressed: freely available music online. Cassettes and CDs were sold until the better part of the 2000s then came the internet with freely available songs. People began downloading the songs without paying a penny. What value does something have when gotten for free? None! Internet users jump from one song to another. It is extremely difficult to retain and engage an audience today. The audience is ruthless, they give only a few seconds before they decide to move on. This has led to a downfall in the quality of music being created today.

It is not really the fault of artists or music creators, but we as a trending audience need to be more evolved to appreciate good music. Yes, musicians and singers are more than capable of recreating the music of yesteryears, but we as a trending audience need to give them an opportunity to shine just like our parents and grandparents did!
