Chhota Rajan, formerly a prominent member of Mumbai’s D-Company, experienced a falling out with kingpin Dawood Ibrahim following the 1993 Mumbai bombings. Rajan has faced numerous death threats from don Chhota Shakeel. Despite being incarcerated in Tihar since 2015, the prison administration has not released any official statements or updates regarding Rajan’s criminal activities. There have been rumors circulating about Chhota Rajan’s demise.
In April 2021, Rajan tested positive for Covid-19 and was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi. Speculation arose about Rajan’s passing after the news of Bihar’s mafia don-turned-politician Shahabuddin’s death from Covid emerged. In 2000, Rajan was targeted by shooters affiliated with don Chhota Shakeel in Bangkok. Although the crime boss sustained multiple gunshot wounds, he managed to survive, fueling further speculation about his death.
Dawood Ibrahim and Chhota Rajan went their separate ways after the 1993 Mumbai blasts due to internal disagreements regarding the ensuing bloodshed following the terrorist attacks. A red corner notice was issued against Rajan in 1994, but it was rumored that since his split with Dawood, he had been assisting federal agencies by providing insider information on the operations of the D-Company. After evading capture for nearly two decades, Chhota Rajan was apprehended in 2015 when he arrived at Bali airport from Sydney. Initially using a passport under the name Mohan Kumar, he eventually revealed his true identity, Rajendra Sadashiv Nikhalke, to immigration authorities.
Rajan’s health has been a matter of concern, especially after his Covid-19 diagnosis. The lack of official updates from the prison administration has only fueled speculation about his well-being and possible demise.
