NAGPUR: Renowned tabla maestro and Padma Vibhushan awardee Ustad Zakir Hussain‘s passing left an irreplaceable void in the world of music, said Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis while addressing the media on Monday after the assembly session in Nagpur.
Expressing his grief, Fadnavis highlighted Hussain’s unmatched contribution to Indian classical music and his role in taking tabla vadan to an international stage.
“The void left by his departure is akin to the silence that follows when the tabla’s rhythm fades away,” Fadnavis said. He added, “Zakir Hussain gave tabla vadan an international identity, captivating audiences for three generations with his mesmerising performances.”
Reflecting on Hussain’s unique style, Fadnavis said, “His stage presence, the magic in his hands, and his captivating artistry were nothing short of a spectacle. Watching him perform was a privilege.” He acknowledged the maestro’s role in inspiring millions of young talents, saying, “Many youngsters were drawn to tabla vadan because of him. Everyone aspired to be like Zakir Hussain.“
Fadnavis described Hussain’s passing as “a loss that can never be overcome” and assured that his teachings and legacy would remain forever. However, he lamented the void left in live performances, saying, “He will no longer grace maifils, and this pain will stay with us.”
The chief minister also extended his condolences to Hussain’s family, offering solidarity in their time of grief. “We stand with his family during this difficult time,” he said, paying heartfelt tribute to the legendary artist.
