Will The India-Canada Growing Tension Upend Business Ties

A diplomatic clash between India and Canada escalated when the Canadian Prime Minister accused the Indian government of being responsible for the death of a Sikh separatist, to which the Indian government refused to accept the charge. The outrage called for an insurgency amidst the expelling of diplomats of either nation.

The Khalistan Movement is as old as the Indian Independence, demanding a separate homeland for Sikhs. The movement aggravated in the 80s, then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s fatal decision to kill the Sikh separatist leader later resulted in widespread dissatisfaction among the Sikh community.

The Sikh activists are raging from time to time. As a result, the protestors pulled down Indian flags in London’s High Commission, vandalizing temples in Canada and more. Earlier this year, we also witnessed tensions in Punjab for arresting the absconder Amritpal Singh, a radical Indian Khalistani separatist.

Sukhdool Singh, another wanted terrorist, was shot dead by unidentified assailants on September 20 in an inter-gang conflict. The criminal had absconded in 2017; he was associated with many heinous crimes and is one of the listed criminals of the National Investigation Agency. Lawrence Bishnoi, a captive terrorist, has claimed the murder.

Earlier this year, the Canada-based Khalistan extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar was assassinated, and the Canadian PM, Justin Trudeau, held the Indian government responsible for triggering tension and controversy between the two nations.

A diplomatic clash probed, and the Indian government has started taking action. India’s foreign ministry has suspended visa services for Canadian citizens due to security reasons of its consulate staff. India has further accused the Canadian diplomats of interference in India’s internal affairs. Arindam Bagchi, the Indian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, stated, “We have seen Canadian diplomatic interference in our internal affairs. This is a factor this a factor that has been taken into account”.

Amidst controversy between the two nations, Indian students in Canada have been advised to remain cautious and released a statement, “…growing anti-Indian activities and politically condoned hate crimes and criminal violence.”

The Canadian government has started reviewing its international education policy as it depends on Indian students.

Vivek Daheja, professor of economics at Ottawa’s Carleton University, said, “The financial connections are powerful in both directions” he continued that the tension could have a more “chilling effect” on investments than on the trades. He added that the allegations against him were an “unprecedented sort of allegation” and that it is hard to think of any leader of the so-called Western nations making this sort of allegation in history.

After much aggravation, PM Trudeau later remarked, “We are not looking to provoke or escalate. We want to work with the government of India to lay everything clear and to ensure there are proper processes”.

The India-Canada diplomatic crisis is now in a state of concern as the agenda of anti-India to influence the government officials of Canada has become prominent and has come into the limelight.
