Will The IMEC Cease Amidst Israel-Hamas Standoff
The Israel-Hamas conflict has taken place and is moving closer to an unstable future of India’s most promising trade route connecting Saudi Arabia and Europe. The India Middle East Economic Corridor (IMEC) was launched recently on the sidelines of the G20 summit in New Delhi. But, the progress of the corridor is seemingly sinking, as the experts suspect.
The countries had agreed to invest in the development of two corridors connecting India to Saudi Arabia and Saudi Arabia to Europe. The corridors are supposed to have cross-border transit through roadways, railways, and shipping, and a transport network. However, due to the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas, the situation in the Gaza Strip has become highly volatile, and it is seemingly impossible to develop the much-awaited corridor in this hour of crisis.
As the war between Israel and Hamas took off, countries are skeptical of the IMEC. “Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Qatar have voiced support for Hamas. The US plans for IMEC corridor or Saudi-Israel peace now don’t look promising.”
The IMEC looked promising when the initiative was declared during the G20 summit. This corridor was a pricking pain for the Chinese. However, diplomats are skeptical that this provoking war could be a part of a much bigger plan to cease or at least delay the progress of the IMEC. As the corridor was a counter to the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), China and its allied countries may have funded the attack to foil the development of the corridor, as believed by some social media users in the X. A user also said, “Hamas knew this attack would lead Israel to retaliate, and every Islamic country would condemn Israel’s behavior, including SA. meaning, NO IMEC.”
However, the Israel-Hamas war is likely to take some time to settle. The Israeli Prime Minister’s Official Spokesperson, Tal Heinrich, said they have evidence of the Hamas terrorist’s abducting the Israeli civilians and gruesomely torturing them. He also added that the war was with Hamas and not with the people of Palestine.
“The IDF found evidence of Hamas-produced kidnapper’s guide. Now the guide explains in gruesome detail how Hamas terrorists should capture and torture kidnapped civilians,” Tal Heinrich said.
The US President’s visit to Israel could reinstate solidarity. Hence, it is time to become poised and vigilant and wait for the conflict to stabilize.
