Former NBA player Lamar Odom has opened up about his ongoing struggle with addiction and recovery in his new Netflix documentary, Untold: The Death & Life of Lamar Odom.

According to People, Odom’s issues with substance abuse date back over a decade, spanning his NBA career and personal life, including his marriage to Khloé Kardashian.

His most serious health scare came in 2015, when he suffered a near-fatal overdose involving drugs and alcohol. Recalling the incident later, Odom said, “My lungs collapsed and my kidneys ruptured. I was on life support… Everyone I’d ever loved was looking at me through bleary eyes.”

Recent setback

Odom’s recovery has not been linear. He was arrested for DUI in January 2026, his second such arrest after a 2013 case, and has pleaded not guilty. His trial is scheduled for July, as per People.

Following the arrest, he entered a 30-day rehabilitation programme in Los Angeles to address marijuana use. His manager told People that the move was a “personal decision” to “reset and focus on his health,” adding that he is taking “full responsibility” and working toward a healthier path.

‘56 or 57 days’ sober

In a recent update, Odom shared that he is currently “56 or 57 days” sober. Speaking to Page Six, he said, “No alcohol, no pot, no marijuana. And I’m just [continuing] to grow mentally and spiritually.”

He added that he draws inspiration from late NBA star Kobe Bryant, saying he tries to follow the “Mamba mentality” in his recovery journey.

Odom also acknowledged how difficult sobriety can be, noting it is “easy” to relapse but stressing, “I’ve come too far to take a step back.”

Documentary revisits darkest moments

The documentary revisits Odom’s 2015 overdose and the years of addiction that followed. It also features candid reflections from Kardashian, who described the extent of his substance abuse and the impact it had on their relationship.

Odom himself speaks about confronting his past, including claiming he experienced “the afterlife” following the overdose.

Now, Odom says he is focused on maintaining sobriety and rebuilding his life. “I’m not the same person. I do everything in my strength to protect my sobriety,” he told Page Six.
