While the Government of India is taking several steps towards empowering the weavers, a lot needs to be done to revive the handicraft sector.
The handloom sector is the second largest industry, just behind agriculture, to provide employment. Although the sector continues to provide employment in rural areas, the industry lags. One of the reasons for the handloom society not being able to reach its full potential is that the weavers are vastly uneducated about how the sector works. Strengthening the weavers in terms of how the sector works will help the sector reach its full potential, enhancing the Indian economy.
One of the reasons for the handloom sector losing significance is power-looms. With the advent of power-looms, the textile industry began to slowly detach from the handloom sector. An article published on The Hindu Business Line mentions the following:
“While the advent of powerlooms reduced the textile industry’s reliance on handlooms, the latter did not lose their significance for the Indian rural population. Handlooms, unlike power looms, are embedded into the social milieu of the nation. Many government policies have been trying to revive the Indian handloom sector since independence. However, most of these policies have limited success.”
Why strengthening weavers is important
While the textile industry largely depends on power looms, the handloom sector can become an industry in itself without depending on the textile industry. Why, you may ask? The handloom weavers bring authenticity and display the rich heritage of India. If the weavers are strengthened, then India can have an industry that can easily generate unimaginable revenue. From the US to the European market, consumers are interested in authentic Indian handloom.
The Hindu Business Line article mentions:
“The current establishment of handloom weavers into clusters and co-operative societies dampens the inherent entrepreneurial nature of the weavers. So, instead of segregating, a network of external centres can be built to facilitate the diverse needs of the various weavers’ communities.”
