Mumbai: Shiv Sena MP from Mumbai North West Ravindra Waikar has urged the union ministry of culture to take up the repair, restoration and conservation of the Jogeshwari and Mahakali caves. He sought expert help as well as funds for the project from the dept.
In a letter to union minister for culture and tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Waikar said the caves from the Pandav era had deteriorated both inside and outside and needed urgent attention.
“Recently, on the directions of the Bombay high court, the BMC demolished slums around the caves. There are some more to be demolished. Besides, there are structures that cannot be demolished without providing alternate accommodation. Illegal garages have sprung up, which are creating hurdles in the restoration and beautification of the caves,” reads the letter.
